A comment on the question "Brightkite is just all-over broken" in Brightkite:

Chris, I think we found the problem...it's a little complicated. It seems that the particular places that you checked in at were having some problems with determining their place hierarchy (i.e. which city, state, etc they are in), and without a city we can't show your entry since you're in private mode.

We are currently overhauling the way that place hierarchies are determined, which should hopefully fix the issues that you're having.

Still no dice. I just checked in and posted a comment. It appears in my private friend stream, but not in my public stream, nor on Twitter. Let me know if I can do anything else to test or if you need to know anything about how I have my account set up. I don't mind being a guinea pig to get this working. (I'm debugging my own stuff today anyways, so I'm in the mode :) )

Actually, looking at settings again, the time-listings aren't correct, because London, Dublin etc aren't on GMT right now, but Daylight Savings - so they should show GMT +1. Presumably the times for other timezones observing daylight savings are also incorrect. – notsheep, on October 06, 2008 21:00

It's off by 7 hours, so even taking the timezones into account, it would still be an hour out (I've tried with my account set to UTC and to London/Dublin time).. Has BK never showed the right time for the rest of us? I only noticed over the weekend when comments looked like they'd showed up hours before the posts they were commenting on. Is there an ETA for getting the timezones fixed? This is a fairly important thing, I'd think. – notsheep, on October 06, 2008 20:55

Are you checked in at city level? If so, that is why it's not visible for you. We can really only provide an "Around Me" radius if you are checked in at an exact address or intersection. You could post in private mode with your location set to show city for everyone else, so that way "Around Me" could be of some use to you and you could still have your location display at city level to the public. – Lesley, on October 06, 2008 17:15

Notsheep, we did a server upgrade over the weekend that caused a couple glitches and the time for posts was one of the things affected. Things should be back to normal now, please let us know if you encounter any other issues with this.
