Greg Williams replied on August 14, 2008 14:41 to the discussion "Changes for SMS users: the good news and the bad" in Twitter:
Australian here, too. I only just found out when I realised I wasn't receiving updates today.
Part of the reason Australians are so agitated by this change is that, unlike many other countries, the costs of "mobile Internet" here are so high that it just isn't a viable option for most. If it was, this SMS thing wouldn't be creating as much of a squabble as it is.
That aside, as someone who has been using Twitter for two years now, I'm finally seeing its adoption by mainstream users. One of my friends who uses it doesn't even have a computer at home!
It feels like just as Twitter was starting to gain traction among new users in Australia – just as people had stopped asking what Twitter was because nearly everyone knew about it – its biggest selling point was taken away.
For those outside Canada, India and the USA, Twitter has become not much better than Identi.ca, Plurk, Pownce or Jaiku.
A comment on the idea "Make it Easier to Give Thanks" in Gnolia:
Thanks, Todd. :)
I'm not sure about others but I've never really interpreted the groups as much more than a broader form of categorization. "These are all the bookmarks about handicrafts", so to speak. As a result, I think the Thanks still goes to the person who saved the bookmark. That's who I'm looking to thank in this particular context (and it takes some time to dig through and find it in their own bookmarks so that I can thank them for it). – Greg Williams, on May 31, 2008 03:38-
