A comment on the idea "Bring the cool stuff (back)!" in BumpTop:
I agree with you. And even though you seem to want to disagree with me, you don't. It's the fact that only one avenue is being pursued that troubles me. If it was all about functionality it would be equally disappointed. All i said is there's basic stuff that hasn't been adressed properly yet and the way it's going is like building a city without streets. It shouldn't be about adding more. It should be about making what's there work and be able to compete against other desktops. If want to play games i'll go to my game folder and chose one. I don't want to have to play games to FIND my game folder!
This is the nerve center of all your activies on your PC. I understand it's important that it's both functional and pleasant. But i'll stick to an ugly desktop if works better than a pretty one. But maybe that's just me... – lifemare, on May 03, 2009 18:09

I was getting more and more disappointed from reading the support topics, but now after seeing the priorities votes i'm actually depressed. All everyone seems to care about is the eyecandy. Really, the crumble option may look cool, but how useful is it? What possible reason would you have for keeping crumpled icons around the desktop?
There's so much to be made in terms of functionality. Bumptop could be so much more! But i'm afraid if the company keeps listening to all the glitter fans who seem to be only be into the first three letters of functionality, it will soon become a psychedelic bloatware. An interactive screensaver with realtime lighting and seasons and 3d objects and pets(!!!).
My advice is, concentrate on making Bumptop do everything a OS desktop already does and THEN add the fireworks. I mean, basic stuff like renaming, menu handling, organizing and positioning, etc, still need to be made much more user-friendly and solid. Don't start coloring before you finished drafting!-

14th: Mouseover pop-up labels of stacked icon's filenames. Instead of having to open the pile, clicking on the icon label would open it immediately. Also a good way to keep track of what's inside the piles...
15th: While we're at it, mouseover has been completely neglected in bumptop. Would be nice if you could integrate the folder details pop-up from explorer. Also it could be useful for adding overlaying buttons to the icons (the ones refered at #9, and maybe a pin icon for the hopefully upcoming unbump feature), sort of like the image toolbar in IE.
16th: How about customizable labels (font, size, color, etc)?
17th: Would love to see a widget for a notepad. One that would be constantly open so you could write and draw in it like a regular one. Beats stickies!-

9th: Better pie menus: icons for common tasks like deleting, renaming, new folder
10th: More stickies options - hyphenate/wrap, scale text when resizing, text alignment, color...
11th: Better control over icon scaling (ex: CTRL+G - double size ALT+G - grows 20%)
12: Allow images to be defined in place as small wallpapers (ie: unbumpable, unmovable unless unlock) - ideal for creating sections of the desktop for different usages.
13th: Clearly defined area for recently created items

lifemare reported a problem in BumpTop on May 03, 2009 11:36:
Too much bumping makes you dizzyPlease please allow an option for "don't bump this icon" on a per icon base. And most importantly a general settings option for disabling folder view bumping altogether.
It's the most annoying thing about bumptop - everytime i open a pile or folder the grid window will bump against every other icon and if the pile is in a corner it will open in a position relative to it, where part of the content will be off-screen. I will then have to be wasting a lot of time reorganizing all the icons it bumped against.
Please make this window behave like a separate unbumpable layer and open in the center of the screen.

I'm always working on a few projects at the same time and Bumptop has helped me unclutter my old desktop in a way i couldn't even suspect. What i'm doing is posting pictures to the walls pertaining to those projects and then piling the different icons in front of them.
But if there was a way to block an image from bumping and keeping it behind all other icons, it could work as a multi-wallpaper desktop. An you could then pile your icons directly on top of that surface.
Better in my opinion than the multiple-desktop being discussed, since after tiding up you're left with so much free space, there's really no need for a second desktop, let alone 10 of them. All you really need is a way to define certain areas and, in a way, give them each it's own easily recognizable theme.-
