Fwiw, there's now an official response from a Twitter employee in another thread.

Earlier this week we pushed out an update to fix some of the strangeness occurring in MSIE; unfortunately, it fixed a small problem and created a bigger one. In the meantime, there's two workarounds:
1. Don't use MSIE (We're not on a get firefox campaign, promise)
2. After you login, manually type in "twitter.com/home"
I'm sure a bug of this magnitude will get dealt with soon. Nonetheless, I apologize for the inconvenience, and I can promise we'll be more vigilant with MSIE testing in the future.

IMHO, it's worth it if you follow the right people. I find that I get the most value out of it when I follow people who are interesting, creative, inspiring, joyful, and insightful. Other people are focused more on increasing their number of followers, which I think kinda misses the point. – mdy, on July 25, 2008 20:04

Thank you! I love Twittering, but there have been so many problems since I signed up I am wondering if it is worth all the hassel. – Eleanor, on July 25, 2008 19:53
