I have some updates for you.
Firstly, the ability to update your live site (publish) is now turned on again.
We have taken steps to reduce the overall load on the environment that was having problems, and are working hard to get to a position where we feel 100% comfortable that we can handle anything that comes our way in terms of demand for the systems.
However, while we are doing that, we are going to prioritize the availability of your hosted sites. So if we pick up that any of the viewers of your published sites are getting errors, we will disable publishing again.
We will keep you informed and thank you again for your patience.
lisaretief asked a question in Yola on December 21, 2008 22:56:
Why do I get a "Publishing is temporarily unavailable" message when attempting to publish my site?We have had intermittent load issues on the servers hosting your
published sites in the last few day, which in some cases could have
resulted in people who access your sites seeing either a blank page or
a "500 Server Error". This does not persist, and if they refresh or
come back later it usually is all okay. We are working hard to make
that problem go away altogether.
In order to reduce load we have made a decision to temporarily disable
publishing. This means that your hosted sites are far more available
(and unlikely to get the errors outlined above) but that you will not
be able to update your sites at the moment.
We will keep you informed of what is going on, and thank you for your
patience in this matter. We are committed to regaining our good uptime
reputation.

Hi guys,
We do know that intermittently, for the past week, during times of load people accessing your sites could get a blank page or a "500 Server Error". This does not last, and if they try again it will be back.
This issue is unrelated to the recent downtime that I was commenting on.
I absolutely acknowledge that this status quo is not good enough, and we are working very hard to resolve it. We have had engineers working on this all weekend and hope to give you good news on it soon.
We will fix it and return to our previous record of exceptional uptime.
The suggestion of a more informative message to your users is something that we will check out in terms of feasibility.

I apologize for the annoyance, and can understand your frustration. I feel the same.
We have had a failure in the hardware of one of our servers. Luckily we plan for this so we are kicking the backup plan into place and then we should be good to go.
We do take a lot of effort to make sure that the inevitable failures that happen with hardware and networking can be resolved speedily and effectively, without any loss of data.
I can confirm that the same symptoms happened 2 days ago and we recovered things within an hour. Our data center assured us that all was well with the server. This time we are not taking their word for it and are switching over to a new server.
This kind of thing does not happen often, but the fact that it has happened twice in 3 days is something that we take seriously and will work hard to prevent in the future.

Hi Karen,
You can email the mx records you want created to support@synthasite.com and we will set them up immediately.
Apologies for the confusion - it was not clear to us at first that you had purchased your domain from us. Only after you sent it through were we able to determine that. Before we had assumed you had purchased it from godaddy.

Ed,
We are currently unable to reproduce your error. We can upload files and view them in the file manager on all browsers, in numerous accounts as well as new accounts and sites.
A couple of other users have reported the same issue though, so we are trying very hard to reproduce it so that we know how to fix it. Where we received permission to log in on behalf of users with the problem, everything worked perfectly.
Will let you know when we find anything. If you make any progress on your side let us know too.
Did you clear all your Firefox history?

Hi Grace,
For Google Analytics, definitely go and change your configuration to reflect the new domain name.
Most other widgets won't care too much - I scanned your website and nothing looks like it would need a change. I they widgets are working, they are happy. Most widgets don't need knowledge of your domain name.
lisaretief replied on November 06, 2008 03:10 to the question "security for my website" in Yola:
Hi,
The answer is that your site is as secure as it is technically possible to make it.
The fact that it is a free service does not inform how we approach security (or any other hosting issues like uptime, speed of availability). You are a customer and we treat as such - whether or not you pay us something. We do the best job possible and devote many hours of some the best engineers in the industry to making sure your sites are secure and most importantly, available.
That having been said, places like government agencies and banks are sometimes attacked by malicious hackers, so if someone with a lot of resources wants to target you through electronic crime anyone is a possible target.
But as Monique alluded to in her response, the weakest point of our or MySpace or Facebook or your online banking platforms is your username and password. So you should keep that safe and secure.
And rest assured that you are backed by leading security measures and engineers who are constantly looking at ways of keeping things secure.
