A comment on the question "why is my ipod not showing up on songbird?" in Songbird:
I think it is a mounting problem in Karmic. Here's a workaround. Maybe this works for you: If you plug in your ipod you see the ipod on your desktop. So just right click on your ipod and select unmount (hope it's named like this, as I'm using the german version) Don't select eject!. Then go to Places and your iPod should be in the list - just click on it to remount it. That's it. – Lito, on November 16, 2009 13:21

pls try to unmount and remount your ipod in karmic. this should work for you. I had the same problem. It has to do with Karmic mounting the ipod readonly with no write-access. – Lito, on November 13, 2009 17:11

Unmounting and remounting does the job for me. The problem here is, that when the ipod is plugged in for some strange reason it is mounted read only (you can check this by trying to create or delete a folder on your ipod). If you right click on your ipod and select unmount and then again mount it by clicking on the device in nautilus it gets mounted with write-access and Songbird can see your device. – Lito, on November 13, 2009 10:48
Lito replied on October 21, 2009 11:15 to the problem "iPod sync broken, 'transcoder not available' but transcoder should not be needed" in Songbird:
Hi there,
I have the same problem on Ubuntu 9.10, 32bit with two iPod classics (4th and 3rd gen). As I can't sync my iPods anymore and I don't think that this is going to change soon, I've been looking for a workaround and I found a quite simple one:
1. Grab this Addon: http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/51
If it isn't compatible with your songbird version (e.g. 1.3b oder 1.4b) follow this instructions (at your own risk!) to disable the extension compatibility check: http://www.getsatisfaction.com/songbi...
2. Make an intelligent or a normal playlist in Songbird that contains all the songs you wanna sync with your iPod.
3. Export the playlist with the addon installed first
4. Use any media programme on your platform available to write on your ipod that is able to import a playlist file (eg. rhythmbox, gtkpod, etc...) and sync it to your iPod.
5. Enjoy your music
I'm not happy with the overall situation concerning device support on Songbird, especially on linux, but at least this workaround lets you enjoy your music without having to change your favourite music programme (that still is Songbird in my case).
Hope this helps you guys.
cheers-

Hi Jacob!
Most probably you'll have to remove the the package libvisual-0.4-plugins from your Ubuntu to get it running.
you can do this by typing this command in the console: sudo apt-get remove libvisual-0.4-plugins
You can follow this issue in this thread: http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/t...
enjoy your songbird
Lito replied on July 08, 2009 16:32 to the question "Why can't I install Songbird?" in Songbird:
Hi Sarah!
Is it the first time you install songbird on your pc? If no, maybe there is still a songbird process running. You can check that by opening the Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) and look for Songbird among the running processes. If you find one terminate the process.
Another problem could be caused by itunes. Maybe you have to close itunes before installing Songbird.

Lito replied on July 08, 2009 14:25 to the question "album artwork" in Songbird:
Hi David!
I personally wouldn't use Songbird to undertake such changes to my library, but it depends on your library size (mine is some 40K). I don't know if songbird could do this with 40.000 songs at once and honestly, I don't wanna test it. I would use a special program like mp3tag or EasyTag to do this, but if you want to try it in Songbird here's what you have to do:
Go to your library in Songbird. Press CTRL+A to select all tracks. Then right click on one track and go to the metadata editor. Songbird will warn you that you are about to change the metadata for several tracks. Be sure to only check the box of the album art (!!!!! otherwise you are going to wipe out other metadata from you library) and right click on it and select clear. If you press ok, songbird will delete all album artwork for your library. Depending on your library size, this can last a long time! Afterwards you can use the album art-fetcher to get new album artwork or you add the album artwork by yourself. If you're going to use the album artwork fetcher you don't need to delete all your old album artwork, as you can use this addon http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/... to edit its properties where you can move to the top in the priority list the amazon album artwork fetcher (this addon http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/... if you haven't installed it yet) so that your old album artwork will be replaced. As the fetcher not always gets an album artwork I would strongly recommend this because in case it doesn't find a cover, at least it leaves the one you have now in your metadata untouched.
Please be careful if you do this because editing all your files in your library at once can be very dangerous, if you accidently change other fields than the album artwork. Please make a backup, just in case ;)
If you have further questions please ask before you do this.
regards
