A comment on the problem "My custom feathers wont install" in Songbird:
well, I appreciate your input. I think it would be a nice idea if it was possible as well as somewhat practical, I mean... in stead of sitting on my ass I would rather be "preserving" something that someone else is unable to do so. Maybe I am exaggerating things a bit lol, but we shall see. ; ) thank you once more, as I too need sleep. – Lord Kante, on July 24, 2008 10:15

I see. well... regarding leftover addons that aren't feathers, they've probably not been updated because it's not practically possible or needs more work than worth to get working with newer songbirds.
Some of the old, not working, feathers may suffer from the same condition, or as you say; they've been left behind by it's creator. In the last case I guess The songbird staff have to sort out some of the oldest since they won't ever be running again.
I don't know how your idea with community upgrading would work from a practical point of view, but I understand your thought. Could be tricky to do though.

well, kind of. I had been looking for that as well (I could only find .4 to .5 so thank you) but I mean like a way for people to change other peoples feathers and upload the newer versions just as the original makers SHOULD do, but don't, for whatever reason. I know that i could update them, (or could at least try) but I dont know how I would be able to update the old ones with the new. (possibly by asking each individual maker) but that may not be possible. I mean a sort of system within the songbird community where people can update what others left behind, because if it isnt updated, its almost like information lost. (i kind of feel strongly about open source and the sharing of content, but when the makers dont update, it hurts others). i think what i am saying is biting off a little more than i can chew, but i have to start somewhere. – Lord Kante, on July 24, 2008 09:53

Is this what you're looking for perhaps?
Update feather to 0.6

lol im glad that helped you as well. And I was planning on putting a few feathers like that, simple with a range of different colors as a starter to give some ppl some simple change, then maybe some more different stuff. I am really new to css, so I am learning it basically by reverse engineering this stuff. lol I really wish there was a program set up for ppl like me to update the other feathers that are really good, just not compatible with the newer versions of songbird you know? I wonder how one could possibly set something like that up. – Lord Kante, on July 24, 2008 09:21

AH! you're right! I've always used winRAR before, but I remember now I used it to compile a couple of other stuff right before it stopped working with .xpi files for songbird and after bringing it back to default it works like a charm!
(btw, good start with the feather! Explore the possibilities with changing images too, it makes a great difference.)

If you haven't yet noticed, i found a solution. It may not be the same problem as you were having, but I do appreciate your interest, and what help you did give me. Here is the link to my feather, and if you like it you can pick the next color! :D thx again.

ok so i thoroughly (and i greatly emphasize the word thoroughly) sought a solution and, i am quite proud to say i have gotten it, although it was nothing i could have imagined, and far simpler.
After finding that there was no difference in files (other than the names and descriptions) I sought other causes, and, for ME anyway, the problem lied within WHAT PROGRAM YOU USE TO ARCHIVE YOUR FILES. (strange huh?) I was using "IZarc". So, after countless trials and such, i have found that for some reason that program simply doesn't work. I made a small list of programs and methods of other programs DO though.
~The default windows "send to zip" command - (what I should have used)
~7Zip (using either the Store, or Deflate methods, as the Deflate64 & BZip2 methods DON'T work)
~WinRAR (using whatever the default method is)
-----------------------------------
but, for whatever reason IZarc wont work, to my knowledge.
These are just ones that i have tried, im sure there are others, but for songbird, just use the send-to-.zip command. :P

I had a feeling it might be the Developer tools. I will try what you said, and if you are interested, i can send you my .xpi file so you could compare it as well. Thx for the help btw.... – Lord Kante, on July 23, 2008 22:00

I know what you're talking about. This occured to me to a couple of days ago. I think it has something to do with the developer add-on...
One thing you can try while we solve the problem is to download a working feather .xpi file, extract it and compare your install.rdf and chrome.manifest files with it. I'll have a look at it in the morning, for now I need some sleep.

My custom feathers wont installok, so this is my first attempt at feather creation, and all went well until I created the .xpi, and then dragged it into songbird. (btw, i have looked over the troubleshooting steps in the wiki, so its nothing overly basic that i can see, ie, all files are in the right places, i had uninstalled the test version, etc), and it starts to install, the "restart songbird" options appears without problem, but when i restart, it doesn't install. It doesn't show up in the "add-on" section and the error console is full of junk. I even tried making a new feather, unchanged, and packaged it into .xpi and it too wouldn't install in the same fashion.
system info:
Songbird 0.6.1
Developer tools 0.4.6
OS: Windows XP pro SP3
I had planned many more feathers, I would love to contribute to songbird, but I need help! plz and thx
