I don't think a Gamertag/Nickname is available immediately when you rename it to something else.
A proper registering system ought to set this Nick as unavailable for at least a couple of months.
Of course, getting another Gamertag is not a solution.
My solution, for a couple of months now, is buying USA MS points from eBay.
Find someone that sells MS points and looks like someone you can thrust. Do check the feedback on someone and see if there's any feedback from people who previously bought MS points from that seller.
I think I've done this 3 times now, they'll usually send you the (working) code through Email within an hour or so.

Well yeah, it's mainly for being able to know what's behind the link.
A perfect link:
http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/08/19/173259/Fable-III-Announced-For-2010
Without going to the page, you will know it's about Games, that it's a story on something and not just some video or image, you know the date (2009 August 19) and even see what it is about more specifically.

Ya, I noticed it's not gonna happen, but your argument makes me think you are not thinking creative.
A simple example would be:

Hey Rick, yes I have already bought US points from eBay twice, but I rather just buy them at the local store.
What still sucks is that all news items/downloads etc are all from US.
Like, I get ads for Netflix while we can't even have Netflix here.
Another annoyance is that people see a US flag near my name on some games.

Having video titles in the URLHere's my idea on a YouTube feature.
Having a YouTube URL with the video title in it.
Example formats:
- http://www.youtube.com/watch/song_from_a_secret_garden
- http://www.youtube.com/w/song_from_a_secret_garden
I know shorter URLs are better, but why not have them both?
Please share your thoughts,
Thanks

Thank you for your reply.
About KB961144:
This problem may occur because the Gamertag change is not applied correctly to your Xbox LIVE Account.
I don't think that's about the same subject, since it's about errors/technical problems while this topic is about an inconvenient setup and/or restriction.
Once at home, I will try calling Xbox support once more.
LouNGeR reported a problem in Microsoft Corporation on March 23, 2009 14:34:
Setting Gamertag to a different Country/RegionWhen creating an Xbox Live Gamertag with the use of a Live Mail account, it seems to take over the contact details from the Live Mail account.
That's fine, because it saves time and all...
But:
When going to "Edit Contact Information" on Xbox.com, the only field that cannot be edited is the Country/Region field.
While you can change the same field in Live Mail, it won't help since the link between the Live Mail contact details and your Gamertag seems to vanish as soon as the Gamertag is created.
I've contacted Xbox support (here in The Netherlands) a while ago to ask for a solution, the answer that the person gave me was to create a new Gamertag, I wouldn't call that a solution if you would ask me.
I guess most people couldn't care less on what region their Gamertag is set, as long as everything works. But here's the catch, some things don't work when it's not set to the region you are in, other things are not what you would expect.
As an example, my account is set to United States, while my Xbox is a PAL machine, and I live in the Netherlands.
The two main problems are:
- Cannot use Microsoft Points
- Everything on Xbox Live is for the US, like, I get ads from Netflix etc.
Without a doubt, this restriction is there for a good reason.
But guess what? Some people actually move to different countries, nobody wants to create a new Gamertag and people actually buy Microsoft Points, that don't even work.
It seems that the Internet is plastered with the same question:
Why can't we change the region on our Gamertag?-
