Hey i finally able to fix it. I retrieved my password from the sign in page then get the Resetting Password link through my email. I clicked the link then change my password. It's that easy :D – lowrobb, on August 20, 2008 15:37

Hi sj3fk3,

I've fixed your first account (sj3fk), so you can use that if now, if you desire.

We do try to check the database for duplicates. The cause of this problem, if you're at all familiar with programming terms, is a race condition. It means that in the span between when one request checks for uniqueness of the name and inserts itself, the other requests inserts itself first. As I've mentioned above, I've got a solution to the problem lined up, I simply don't have the time at the moment, given all of my other tasks, to execute on it.

I'm really sorry for letting it get to this state in the first place, and I hope it isn't a deal killer for you.

Same problem. Cannot change password for (other) account. Maybe getsatisfaction should do a duplicate search in the database?

Hi, I got the same problem. Created an account while replying to a post. I then got 2 emails with account verification. It is verified but I can't change any account settings and therefore not even my password (tried requesting new pw too). I always get the "Canonical name has already been taken" message, which by the way doesn't help a lot ;)
Hope this can be fixed soon.

Nope, it's always the same issue. I know the cause, I just can't get the time scheduled to fix the bug that only affects 1 out of 1000 sign ups.

sorry about the frustration lakema...

you should be able to set your password successfully now. The root of your problem hasn't been solved yet, but I've cured the symptom. You shouldnt be affected by this in the future.

If you've forgotten your original password, log out and go to the sign-in page. On that page is a box that will let you enter your email if you have forgotten your password. You can then follow the link in the email we send you to reset your password without knowing your current password.

Hi Eric. I did get to the page (from your example) by confirming my email. When i tried to change the password, the system asked my current password which i don't know.

The e-mail verification message should have a generated password in it. You click on the "Confirm" link in the e-mail and that lets us know your e-mail address is valid. This will also take you to your dashboard, and from there you can change that password.

After verifying my email, i tried to change my password, but then it failed. Then i remember, i never asked for any password at sign up page, only user name and email. So i never have password to be exact. How can i add one? Or if it's there, where can i get it?
