Louis St-Amour gave praise in foursquare on October 24, 2009 05:14:
Dead cell batt.? Forget email; I wanted to check-in!It's replaced Email/Twitter as the #1 reason I check my battery status on my iPhone. I can always remember to check or send my email or tweets when I get home, but how can I tell people where I am without foursquare? :p
A comment on the problem "Same Place, multiple locations: Starbucks" in foursquare:
I don't see that as a problem, at least with naming or searching. When I want the McDonald's at Keele and Finch, I type in McDonald's Keele and up pops "McDonald's - Keele and Finch" (which I added).
However, I agree with earlier posts that a search for "McDonald's" should turn up more than one result. OR provide the option to narrow your search. AND when I'm in the vicinity of said McDonald's, I see it on my iPhone automatically. (Just hit Refresh in Places to reload the list of nearby places. This works best outdoors with a good GPS signal.) – Louis St-Amour, on October 24, 2009 05:05
A comment on the question "Non US cities - when will they be added??" in foursquare:
I love this comment. "weird stares" ftw! :-) – Louis St-Amour, on October 24, 2009 04:58
Louis St-Amour replied on October 24, 2009 04:51 to the question "Why can't i check in from the website?" in foursquare:
What I would LOVE to have on the main website: an option to "checkin in the past" ...
My iPhone died at 10pm, while I was still out and about, but when I got back to my PC at 11:40, I could only "checkin" at the current time, as opposed to checking in from the past.
And I had a tweetable moment: "You know you're addicted when ..." your battery dies and the only reason you're upset is because you can't check-in on foursquare. ;-)

Thanks for your comments. Sorry it took so long for someone to reply...
I'd say the community is quite vibrant and peaceful, repairs are done very quickly, and it's great to have access to all the transit on campus. And especially if you work or go to school at York, you'll love it on campus. The one tricky part is it's a bit of a stretch to get groceries, the nearest places would be the Super Centre (Loblaws) on Steeles & Dufferin, or the No Frills down Keele, I think. There's always the General Store at York Lanes, in a pinch. Oh and there's a small grocery store in "University City" off Sentinel Rd. And a Price Choppers and another No Frills at Jane-Finch and Yorkgate Mall, respectively.
As for getting downtown, the 196 Express will soon run more frequently, and a bus-only road is being built in the hydro corridor from Keele to Dufferin. Plus, the Spadina subway is coming in a few years: it will be between Shulich School of Business and the Archives of Ontario, just in front of the Commons.
I've lived in a townhouse here since the place opened, 14 or 15 years ago, so I'm a bit biased. ;-) But I love it here. The only problem, really, is the garage can make the bedroom directly above it rather cold sometimes, and the walls between townhouses can let loud noises through. The master bedroom has a walk-in closet and great light when facing south, as ours does.
Thanks very much for your questions. As you can see, these forums aren't yet publicized, but I hope to get the word out soon.

I would like to know more about living at the co-op...(Oct. 3, 2007)
Hi,
My name is Anna. I am an undergrad student at York hoping to begin graduate studies next September. My husband and I are also trying for our first child.
I would like to know more about living at the co-op. How well does the community relate/communicate? Do things that need to get done get done in a timely fashion? What is it like living on campus? Do you feel isolated? What are the town houses like to live in? Are they designed nicely? Good light? Noisy? Is there enough closet space?
Anyway if anyone could answer some of these questions I would be very greatful.
Thanks for your time.
Anna
A comment on the discussion "How can you apply for membership? How long is the waiting list?" in Harry Sherman Crowe Housing Co-operative:
(July 8, 2008)
good luck with that....
From my personal experience.....applying to Herry Sherman Crow and wait to get a place to live is just a waste of time. My best advice is to apply to York Apartments as they have priority for students with families. Herry Sherman Crow will keep telling you for few years that they are trying to compile their wiating list and after that time they will compile (may be) and then will tell you...pls check back with us in a year or so as we don't have any availabilities and their are quite a few people ahead of you on the list. Decision is yours....

Hello HSC Co-op
Both my wife and I will be attending York University soon, she this September 2008 then I after her when she finishes, in about two years. We currently live in Scarborough but work in North York. Given that we thought it was advantageous to move closer to both school and work, so HSC came up first as the best Co-op for us to relocate there. However, we contacted (voice-mail, e-mail and in person) but have gotten neither reply nor response for our efforts. Please let us know how we could get an application form for membership as well as how long, if any is the waiting list.
We give thanks in advance!

Louis St-Amour replied on August 31, 2008 04:15 to the question "What's the difference between a condo and a housing co-op? Resident qualifications?" in Harry Sherman Crowe Housing Co-operative:
A condo is a place you buy and own as an individual and can resell later, like a house. An apartment or condo rental is where you don't own it, and you instead pay a monthly fee for rent. The advantage to a rental agreement is that you don't have to try and finance a mortgage up front, and compared to new yet-to-be-built condos, you already know what you're getting, as you can see the place before you move in. Plus, initial repairs, appliance costs, and sometimes extra services, are offered in a rental situation - for instance, you will never have to worry about paying the plumber if it wasn't you who caused the problem and the pipes back up somehow.
A housing co-operative, in Ontario, is very different from the above situations - it's like a combination of the two, with a twist. While you can't resell housing co-operative lands, every person who lives in the co-op is a "member" and owns a share of the co-operative. The membership as a whole meets every year to approve the budget and again to review the auditor's report of last year's expenses. The membership also sets its own by-laws and rules of the co-operative, as well as elects a Board of Directors to oversee the property on its behalf, making decisions on important matters on a monthly basis. There are often committees for organizing events and working on local issues. Finally, for day-to-day management of the co-op, the Board selects a management company or employs staff. The Board, like all co-op members, is a voluntary position, and at Harry Sherman Crowe, the by-laws agreed to in the mid-1990s state that every member must volunteer or participate at least 4/hrs a month.
In terms of qualifications - some co-ops have special mandates to give preference to people based on specified criteria. Harry Sherman Crowe, however, is not one of those co-operatives. If you pass the usual credit check and we've the space (there's a waiting list), you're free to live here. While the co-op does have the right, as do all co-ops, to refuse applicants based on demonstrated lack of co-op spirit or values, we have rarely, so far, exercised that right. One other advantage co-ops have is the RGI (rent-geared-to-income) program, but there's an Ontario-wide waiting list that's years long to get it.

I only wish I knew about it earlier, I would have switched and saved money ... I'm paying half what I used to, from a discounted Code Monster plan (reg. $39.95) that I bought for $19.95 ... but now I get what seems like the same thing, for only $10.95 or less. Wow. =)
I just wish in another year or two, I could get by paying $2.50/mth :-p
Either that, or give us more CPU cycles. I'm flexible. =)

It appears I'm not the only one wanting a non-DreamWeaver template solution. Judging by the browser in the screenshot, I would say that "Simple Templating Tool" is ancient, but it does seem to do a similar job. Perhaps you could steal some implementation ideas from it: http://stt.sourceforge.net/stt.html
Oh that's interesting. This says it was updated in 2003 and written in Perl: http://sourceforge.net/projects/stt
Note too that the above doesn't specifically state its DreamWeaver compatibility, except to say that: If you use DreamWeaver to edit pages created with STT it will prevent you from making page changes outside of editable regions. (But if you have DreamWeaver, you probably don't need STT!)
So that implies a certain amount of DW-STT compatibility. Of course, I'm not sure how it handles relative links, as mentioned in my original post above.

I wish I could use my Viva ticket for 3 hours to see movies ...I love Viva. I only wish they let you use a ticket for 3 hours so you could see a movie in Woodbridge on one ticket. Either that, or a half-price montly pass for York U. students who travel more on TTC via Metropass than on Viva.
Louis St-Amour reported a problem in Chapters Indigo on August 28, 2008 17:23:
Why does Indigo never post hours on their site? Why do they NEVER post hours? Not even ESTIMATES? For instance, though it's a rare sunday evening that Indigo closes early, you can't tell on their site that Yorkdale is 10 to 10 everyday, or Eglinton is open until 11 some days, as is Bay and Bloor. They post physical signs but say their website is subject to change. What? A physical sign is harder to replace or update than a virtual one. Come on!
