Luzius replied on February 11, 2008 11:47 to the problem "\\wua\la" in Wuala:
Hi maze. There are technical reasons for this. It simply doesn't work with the windows file explorer. For example, when browsing to a directory with images that have not been downloaded before, the windows files explorer freezes completely until it has downloaded all the images and generated all thumbnails. Similar things happen with mp3 when it searches for their meta data.
Regarding write access: this is a planned feature. However, we can't promise when it will be ready.
However, if you consider using Wuala for backup only, there might be more solutions out there that are more suitable to you. See also gtavares' great response.

Wuala ́s primary feature is not being a backup system, as far as I understand (although it can be used as such). It is mainly a file sharing system whose distributed topology enables storage trading - and that is what is revolutionary. Imagine how much idle disk space there is across the internet, in clients as well as in servers. If a system can use at least a part of this idle space wisely, and that ́s in my view the main purpose of Wuala, one can even start thinking about bandwidth savings and hardware downgrade (and that means $). It is a way to use the net in a more clever way. As of the UI, that is a minor for me. It is good as it is now, and it will be better if completely integrated into the OS file browser, but that ́s only a nice to have.
maze replied on February 08, 2008 21:48 to the problem "\\wua\la" in Wuala:
Too bad. This is a deal-breaker for me.
With the non-standard browser their UI uses, including lack of extensions, their own thumbnails, and no way to hide the huge settings/action panel which includes a myriad of UI functions and even a picture of myself, they simply don't deliver on their promise to integrate with existing tools and workflows...
If the OS file browser had been their primary interface, Wuala would probably become my backup of choice, and I would make all of my family members use it...
Why try to re-invent the wheel?

this has been discussed before.
as of now, the api and data exchange for the unc paths are read only. files can only be modified through the wuala gui.
at some later time, the wuala team will probably implement some more features and functions and the wuala storage will be writable also with other means.

Your computer only downloads files when you open or download them. So the files you saw in the network share are only listed there, but not on your computer (unless you downloaded them). Did you access files of that user, e.g. by opening something you have found while browsing in the World area? That could explain why your Mac was showing the Gotham2k8 folder.

wua has always been working for me... it takes some minutes after every client restart until the wuala client binds that sharename on windows
you can always navigate through the foldertree with any kind of application that can handle those UNC \\wua\la\ pathnames on windows.....
winamp most of the times streams audio files directly from the unc path on my machines without any problems.
cheers.

I have a similar "problem" on my mac.
There is a network-share called nfs://localhost/wuala, including this "readme.txt" file.
But most strange thing is that there is a folder of a wuala-user "Gotham2k8" and all files are publicly readable.
I have searched for him using the wuala interface and found, that his files are truely readable to the public.
So I am little bit concerned about the fact, that some files might be "illegal" and they seem to be on my computer (localhost), at least in that nfs-share.
Is this normal? I don't see my personal folders there.

Limited account, windows xp.
When I run it as a user with administrator account, it succeeds to update itself.

I've just fixed this. After the next update, this should work again. Generally, you can navigate to any folder by just entering the path (even though the users aren't listed), e.g. with "\\wua\La\Luzius" or by entering "cd //wua/la/Luzius" in cygwin. However, the share isn't always named wua, it could also be wua1, wua2, wua3, etc. The alternate names are used when Wuala fails to bind to wua (e.g. because another share with that name already exists).
