A comment on the problem "Getting too much @mention spam from spymaster" in Spymaster:
Controlling other users' @mentions isn't really the way to go, anyway. Asking them isn't really a scalable solution, either.
I know there isn't an elegant solution now, but if spymaster keeps growing, there's gotta be some way to address this, because I'd like to keep the signal-to-noise of my @mentions high. I'd like to unlink my twitter account (make FB my primary) somehow. That's the solution I'd like to see at some point soon. – David Horn, on July 27, 2009 18:28

Getting too much @mention spam from spymasterAs much as I like spymaster, the amount of spymaster assassination attempt tweets in my @mentions is getting annoying. These aren't from *my* attempts, but from other people attempting to assassinate me. It'd be nice if there were some solution for this (other than, you know, deleting accounts).

Your response to this issue strikes me as the response of a business that is reluctantly realizing you are a social network. You're a community site, yes, but what kind of a community do you want to build? A community where concepts like common human decency aren't enforced? Keep this up and a year from now the only people paying attention to your pages will be SEO spammers and marketers, since no decent person will want to expose themselves to this kind of risk.
"Block the user." Fine. Whatever. Perhaps you should consider the track command OBSERVE YOUR BLOCK RULES? Or does your lack of harassment enforcement extend to harassed users getting reduced functionality, too, since they'll need to stop using certain features?
What kind of community are you looking to build, twitter? I hear nothing but "scaling scaling scaling" out of your mouth, but there is more to building a business than making a web site scale. Keep this up and you won't have to worry about scaling anymore.
I am actively discouraging anyone from further adopting twitter until this gets resolved to Ariel's satisfaction...then I *might* consider changing my stance. You put your fear of getting sued over loyalty to your good users. That isn't a way of encouraging community support.
A comment on the problem "Twitter refuses to uphold Terms of Service" in Twitter:
Except blocking has no relevance when it comes to tracking. How many people track their twitter name as a way of finding out who's @replying to them? Enforcing these kinds of rules on a community site is ACCEPTED PRACTICE. – David Horn, on May 22, 2008 22:30

Having looked at this problem in-depth over the course of the last few years, I know that this is a horrible, messy idea to implement. You need software for each cellphone platform, and you need server implementations that are different for every provider. Cell providers don't make it easy to give up location data.
That said, somebody needs to do it. Whoever does will own the social LBS space.-

Look at the url. =]
Also, you can look at friends of friends. That's how I'm doing it right now. – David, on April 15, 2008 00:07

David reported a problem in Brightkite on April 14, 2008 23:46:
Overlapping icons in map viewsSo now that I have about 5 or 6 people reporting their location in my city and *ahem* one person in Colorado, the map view of my friends zooms out such that all the people in my town look like one overlapping icon. It'd be nice if you could detect icon clipping on map views and combine them into a single icon somehow.
