Hi everyone,
we have been digging deep into twhirl to find the bug causing the problem you all have, and we found a possible reason that might be the culprit.
An updated version of twhirl 0.8.2 that fixes the bug can be downloaded from http://beta.twhirl.org/twhirl-0.8.2-t...
Please update your installed version to this and tell us if it solves the problem for you.
Thanks!

palisade14, Dave and Max, thanks for sharing your tips!
Everyone who sees this problem should check his firewall settings to find out if this solves the issue.
While we see from this thread that a few people seem to be affected by this, we haven't seen it ourselves yet. We are preparing a debug version for you that will report a lot more information that will help us to find out what exactly fails when twhirl tries to connect to your account(s).
I'll keep you all updated here, and hope to have a solution for your problem soon!

That's actually weird, as the file available from our server is definitely not damaged. Can you mail me at info@twhirl.org, so I can send you a clean copy of the install package by mail?
Thanks!
Marco Kaiser replied on June 11, 2008 23:05 to the problem "Damaged AIR file preventing reinstallation" in Seesmic:
That's a known issue of the AIR installation process, unfortunately.
Have you tried to manually download the twhirl installation package to your computer, store it on your local drive, and double-click it from there to install it? You'll find the installation package at http://www.twhirl.org/files/twhirl-0....

A short update: thanks to the help from Rick Marshall, we were able to do some tests and narrow in on the error. We will continue to solve the issue and let you know when we find a solution.
If you want to downgrade to the previous version, here's the installer:

sorry, the version numbers are a bit odd here, due to the CMS handling projects. 0.8.001 is twhirl 0.8.1, you'll also see this when you look at the filename for the release – Marco Kaiser, on June 11, 2008 22:59

Hi everyone,
we are sorry you are experiencing this issue. We are definitely looking into it, but weren't able to reproduce it yet.
Please provide as many information as you can about your system (like operating system and version you use).
If you don't see a window after clicking connect, please try to execute the "Reset windows" command from twhirl's dock / sys tray icon context menu. A possible reason for your problem could be that the windows are somehow rendered outside of the visible area of your screen, and this command should bring them back.
You might also want to send us your log files. twhirl writes error messages to a file called "twhirl.log" on your computer. For the location of this file, please visit http://twhirl.org/node/129, it can be found in the same folder as the "accounts.xml" file. Send you logs to info@twhirl.org please! Thanks
Let me say again, we are sorry you have these problems!

Hi,
although the MB Air hasn't the largest screen availabel, the default size of a twhirl window (320x400 pixels) should fit on it :-)
If, for some reasons, the window has become too large, or is moved outside the visible screen, try to context-click on the twhirl icon in your dock, and select the "Reset Windows" command from the menu. This should position them in the top right corner of your screen and shrink them to the default size.

Marco Kaiser replied on May 30, 2008 10:06 to the problem "Limit Exceeded issue..." in Seesmic:
If you encounter this problem at the moment, it could be due to the temporarily reduced API limit Twitter enforces after their technical problems and outages last week. They have decreased the maximum number of requests allowed per 60 minutes from 70 to 30. First, try to adjust your settings in twhirl, I'd recommend to use not more than 20 req/hour for now.
We have no information when Twitter will return "back to normal" and set the limit back to 70, sorry.
If you have decreased your API usage in twhirl, and you are absolutely sure that no other applications, websites or else accesses your twitter account, but still see the limit exceeded message, please contact Twitter directly so that they can check your account. There have been reports in the past that some users were still blocked, even when they did not use the API over the limit. In this case, we can do nothing for you, as twhirl depends on the responses it gets from the API.

That's not my impression. True, AIR is relatively resource hungry when it actually performs anything, esp. UI, but I can't see that it consumes >5% CPU even when idle on Windows, as it does on OSX. It stays well below 1%. – Marco Kaiser, on May 26, 2008 19:38

Marco Kaiser replied on May 26, 2008 12:18 to the question "Unable to install on Mac" in Seesmic:
This sometimes happens when using the automatic installation provided on twhirl's homepage. The AIR installation package available from our server is definitely not damaged, as most users are able to use it for installation.
I suspect a somehow damaged download file that is still in a browser's (or AIR's) cache to be responsible for this. Please try manually downloading the install package to your local disk and then double-clicking it from there. Usually, this solves the problem.
Also, when downloading the installer, avoid saving it to and installing from a connected network drive. This is known to be problematic on some systems.

Marco Kaiser replied on May 26, 2008 12:07 to the problem "Really fuzzy font rendering on Windows XP: does not seem to be AIR's fault" in Seesmic:
Tevi,
thanks for your message. Unfortunately, you can't compare Spaz and twhirl when talking about font rendering. While twhirl is based on Flash and depends on the Flash player's font rendering, Spaz uses HTML and renders fonts differently.
twhirl relies on fonts installed on your system to support the widest possible range of character sets and languages. But not all fonts render well in Flash on AIR, so you might have to select and try another font in the configuration (click on the little wrench icon at the top right and go to "VIsual" tab).
Marco Kaiser replied on May 18, 2008 19:14 to the question "Changed my Twitter name - now locked out of Twhirl?" in Seesmic:
Marc,
even when twhirl prompts you for the password, you can open the accounts manager by right-clicking (or ctrl-clicking on OSX) the twhirl icon in your sys tray (or dock on OSX). Then follow the instructions from my previous reply to delete the old and add the new account.
To find out where twhirl stores the accounts you added, please visit http://www.twhirl.org/faq and check the "Where does twhirl store my configuration?" question.
