I agree, GRAPE has to replace the desktop, it is not a windows with a statut bar and a size. It has to be in the background all the time.

I've got another idea, (i'm not sure that really the point here but let's see)
Why not display the content of the folder in grape into a box, and that box is a finder folder.
For exemple i've got a folder on my desktop called "Movie", In grape i don't see the folder but a box called "movie" and in this box i can directly see the content of the "movie" folder.

That a visual way to deal with folders, and a practice way to organise files in the finder.

Here I've got quite the same problem, a pdf file is seen as a movie, but when i open it, or open it with quicklook everything is alrigth...

This pdf was maded with Pages ( named "grape 5/0.pages") by "print" then "save as pdf" then change the "_" by a "/".
In Grape all the "/" in the name of the file are seen ":"

it doesnt do it all the time but i dont know why..

And why not make icons smaller, it's another way to have a bigger desktop.

Zoom out endlessly

Why not zoom out without limit?
In order to have a bigger desktop and smaller icons.
And when we zoom in, stop it when we have only one item on the screen.
