If you didn't have a chance to get this fixed yet: I solved what seems like the same problem you are facing by really checking whether I had the right password. It turned out that I didn't. With the right password, it actually worked fine.
(I agree that the process and app feedback could be improved, as I, too, was a little confused about an apparent account conflict, although the account was fine.)
