margaret francis replied on September 30, 2009 06:10 to the question "How search result created" in Scout Labs:
Hello Narendra: What we do when we query an external API, for instance Flickr or Smugmug, is try to map the logic of your query to the options available in each individual API. The logic available by source API is constantly changing per the specs made available fo the developer community. For instance, Flickr allows us to use Boolean logic such as "MSFT or Microsoft," whereas Smugmug doesn't allow that. You can read the specific query used with the service right off the search results page. Here's an example: "30 most recent photos matching social media (No photos found for scout labs AND Zeszut)."

Hello Dave: I just searched our blog to see if I could find the reference you spoke of, but I could not find a reference to category or categories that seems to refer to a feature, and I am not sure what you mean. Can you tell me more about what you are looking for? We'd like to help you as best we can!
margaret francis replied on July 29, 2009 23:13 to the idea "Influence Measure" in Scout Labs:
Hello Erin: Right now the main measure of influence in the application is the "importance" ranking of results, which is based on the inbound links to post and to mention. It's very helpful in making sure you see the most influential results for any search. We are planning on creating a "Scout Index" kind of measure which would show you at a glance, on a visual scale of 1-10, how important we think a post/piece of content is based on readership. This metric would include measures like inbound link count, traffic to source, # of followers, whatever metadata is appropriate for that social media type. You could also filter on this score, for instance "only show me the things that are 8 and above," or create lists like "show me the sites that score 10 or above for this search." The target release date for that kind of scoring is this fall. Is that what you are talking about? Let us know, because we're working on it now!

Not without giving you command line access to the application, unfortunately! One of the challenges in delivering this feature in a satisfying way is making sure we get everything from what you consider a "source." Until we can ensure that when a user enters "techcrunch.com" they get "mobile.techcrunch.com" and "techcrunch.fr" and content from other sources which are from that TLD, whereas when you search for "blogs.wired.com" you get "blogs.wired.com/science" and "blogs.wired.com/technology" and NOT everything from the "wired.com" TLD, we probably won't make it generally available. Look for this in the summer timeframe.

Hello Randy: We wage daily warfare on spam. As of today our algorithms classify as spam 70% of what humans classify as spam, and what we do is send it to the bottom of the results set. Starting tomorrow, we will simply suppress it altogether. Take a look at your results tomorrow and tell me if the change is helping. Also stay tuned for a new feature next month which will let you choose whether to view/ not view spam in your results sets- some of our customers want that option!

margaret francis replied on February 20, 2009 07:49 to the question "Missing Blog Results" in Scout Labs:
Hello! At Scout Labs we try to focus on timely, recent blog content, and we purposely cover ~the top 12 million blogs of what we know to be a much larger blogosphere. I tried your same search on Google BlogSearch and when I narrowed down to results in the last month, instead of all time, I got 2 results. One was from http://vawatchdog.org/ (has a couple hundred veterans' affairs related blogs linking to it) and other from http://www.italkcash.com/forum/ (1 external link). We don't currently have either. I just added http://vawatchdog.org/ to our crawl, and if you want us to add that other source or any others to our crawl, just click the "Add a Source" link at the bottom of every page in the application. We'll try to get whatever you add for you- sometimes we can't, for instance protected Facebook pages and the like- but we'll try. Thanks for the feedback!
margaret francis asked a question in Amazon.com on February 06, 2009 21:15:
How can I give someone with a Kindle the gift of an electronic book?I always used to give books for christmas, but now that i've given everyone in my life a kindle, I have no way to give them presents of anything but coffee table books. How do I give a Kindle owner a book for their Kindle? Has this really been overlooked by the makers of Kindle? And no I do NOT want to just give them an Amazon gift card, I want to give them A SPECIFIC TITLE I have personally selected for them. Kind of like a "book."

That does not answer the question and is not helpful at all. I'll do it, but it doesn't exactly make me feel the love. – margaret francis, on February 06, 2009 18:44-
