A comment on the question "How do I tell Flickchart about future viewings?" in Flickchart:
Right now it only shows your Top 20 unseen movies on your profile page, but we'll be adding a link soon that lets you view all of your unseen movies, similar to your favorite movies chart. In the meantime, if there's a movie you know you've seen recently that you want to rank, just do a search at the top of the page, and then choose "Rank This Movie" on that movie's info page. This will allow you to quickly rank it, and the system will mark it as seen. – Nathan, on August 01, 2008 13:33

James & Mark,
There actually is a notification, although it's admittedly very subtle and not too clear. When you request to be someone's friend, you will see that "Pending" status on their profile page, as you mentioned. The other user will get an alert on their profile page (in the block right below your user info, on the left). Clicking on that alert link will yield an ugly little page that will let you accept the friend request.
Functionally it works, but intuitive and elegant it's not. We're going to be working some kinks out of the alert system in general, and the friend requests in particular, in the near future.

I'm still working on the algorithmic improvements that I mentioned before, but it's also worth saying that the new method of Haven't Seens (that the movie you HAVE seen stays there until you can match against it) should help this greatly.
We've gotten some good feedback from users that their lists are resolving noticeably more quickly now.

Let me just get it out of the way immediately: the matchup comments are STILL useless, from your perspective.
But they are prettier. We've eliminated the two-column design that was causing mass confusion among users (all but, um, two of us...it would seem), and replaced it with a nicer-looking, less cluttered, and hopefully much more intuitive interface. You can check it out from the Discussions link on the top menu bar, or by various other discussion links throughout the site.
If anyone has the time, please drop us a line to let us know what you think.

This issue was posted in two places, although you were the first. Sorry for the wait. We just pushed code that addresses this issue, so that now, if you mark one of the two movies as unseen, the one you have seen will stay in the same position, with the same poster image, until you rank it against another movie.
Let us know if anything quirky shows up again.-

Mark, I'll also add that if you personally want to throw more older movies in, remember that you can use the filters to focus on a particular year or decade. But as Nathan said, you'll see more and more of those naturally introduced in the unfiltered list as you rank.
We wanted to engage new users right away, rather than having them bail after hitting 15 straight haven't seens off the bat. We're tweaking the algorithm all the time, though, so although the general theme will hold true, you might see a little more of a balance in the future.

Yep. There's going to be a lot of fragmentation at the margins, but we're hoping to see a lot of solid arguments around popular movies (Star Wars vs. Star Trek, Bond vs. Bond, Ghostbusters vs. BttF, etc.). We're taking a chance on it, but people seem to enjoy it so far.
Soon, the matchup comments will be cross-referenced on the individual movie pages, so on the page for Lebowski you'll see comments about Lebowski in general, as well as in the context of various matchups.
Part of the inspiration for the matchup comments, btw, comes from a site I used to waste time on in college called WWWF Grudgematch [www.grudge-match.com]. The guys propose a kinda nuts matchup, like John McClane vs. the Death Star, and then argue about it to an academic extreme. It's stupid and useless, but also fantastic and wonderful.
So...maybe that gives a little context. "Useful" might be a less accurate description of what we're going for, which really is a verbalization of how some of these folks actually compared the two movies -- I mean, how the heck do you analyze Monsters, Inc. vs. Cube?
