This way, we can get everyone who is experiencing this problem right now into one thread.

This specific thread that we're now in, unfortunately, is 4 months old and I suspect that the cause of the problem four months ago is different from the cause of the problem today. I'm hoping that by getting everything into one thread, we can avoid mixing up unrelated error reports, so Twitter can focus on the pertinent facts when they perform their troubleshooting.

I've noticed that it takes some time -- usually around a day -- for the avatars on our sidebar to 'catch up' when we follow someone new or unfollow someone. I think it might have something to do with the way Twitter has implemented caches, but that's just a guess.
