i have unlimited texting on my phone, and even though i have email and web access on my phone, it doesn't work in my area (parts of vermont), so txting ping updates from my phone is paramount for me, otherwise, it's useless as i use brightkite (which DOES do this from my phone). – vtknitboy, on August 21, 2008 03:09

Simplest option is to create an SMS to email gateway. Like this guy:

Until ping.fm launch their own SMS service. But even then, it might still be a US based shortcode, in which case, it probably won't work for international users.

A shortcode might complicate matters. It might not work internationally. A regular GSM no should work fine, although it's harder to remember. I believe you can get incoming SMS gateways fairly inexpensively, but it still might be beyond the budget. – Callum Macdonald, on July 24, 2008 23:59

first check your sent messages and make sure ping is attempting to send to plurk, it should have the orange plurk icon in the services list. http://ping.fm/recent/ If it is, and you still have the problem, let me know your plurk username and i can check into it more. – Adam, on July 09, 2008 00:20

An example of the hyphens/spaces agitatedstate mentions is currently on my twitter profile page: http://twitter.com/reginarivera. I sent this update via my cellphone using my Ping email address. I'd like to NOT have them appear. Thanks! – regina, on July 07, 2008 19:51
A comment on the question "Can I use Ping.fm with Identi.ca via OpenID?" in Ping.fm:
Thanks for the response, Sandy, but that's not what happens with me. I wish it did! What I'd really like now is to be able to delete my Identi.ca account so I can re-create one with the same user name and e-mail address, but NOT using OpenID - but at the moment, as far as I can see, there's no way to delete an existing Identi.ca account - unless I'm missing something! – SomersetBob, on July 07, 2008 16:18

I appreciate this problem is probably being worked on, but just to add my experience in case it helps identify what's wrong:
I've tried the above workaround (twice now since joining both indenti.ca and ping.fm 24 hours ago), but no joy.
I received the "recover password" e-mail on both attempts, but on clicking the link, my (IE7) browser couldn't open it (It asked if I want to find a program on the internet to open it), so I copied and pasted it into the address bar. It then went to an identi.ca web page, but the page said there was "no such recovery code".

Good point about Twitter's not-exactly-wonderful uptime. Still, I don't think it's a reason for not to implement the idea. You'd just have to add the caveat that Twitter isn't always that reliable. It hasn't stopped other services using Twitter. I am a massive fan of ping.fm and I use it a lot- but to be honest I would use it more (and recommend it to my non-techy friends) if we could have SMS- and using Twitter might be a start. – baritoneuk, on July 05, 2008 09:04
