If you're only posting to a custom URL, then you should have control of everything on the other end. There's no way to send a delete command from Ping.fm, and, in fact, getting users to unknowingly do things is a common exploit, so most web apps protect against this kind of attack.

You should be able to browse to your secret URL, and it should come back with an error message: "no direct access allowed, post something instead". If you're not receiving that error message, then something might be wrong.
Can you give me your version numbers for the plugin and for WordPress? PHP and MySQL version numbers would be helpful if you know them.

Hi there,
I'm the developer of that plugin. Usually when that happens, there's another plugin installed (Bad Behavior or another security plugin) that's blocking access.
Are you seeing any error messages after activating the plugin?

Looks like you were using the "CR Post to Ping.fm" plugin. As you discovered, it probably requires PHP 5, and you were probably using PHP 4 at the time. Whoever wrote that plugin should do a better job of checking to make sure the minimum requirements exist before activating the plugin. -

This may or may not be related, but I haven't had any success posting images today. I've tried through my Google Apps account and through another account I have (with Tuffmail, which is widely regarded as being one of the best email providers out there). Even plain text posts via email aren't coming through. -

There's a page that has some examples of working with a custom URL, but you'll still have to figure out how to hook everything into the WordPress backend.

OK, here's the thing---the custom URL feature does an HTTP POST to the URL you specify. You need to have code running on your end that receives the data and does something useful with it.
