Matt Langston reported a problem in twitterfeed on September 02, 2009 01:03:
urlShort (u.mavrev.com) taken offline by hosting company, HostingZoom. All URL creations and redirections are unavailable. Due to an issue beyond my control, HostingZoom has cut off all access to urlShort, without any prior notice or consultation with Maverick Revolution. We are working to resolve this as soon as possible, but have no estimate for completion as we are waiting on them to allow us to access our own files. I apologize for this issue (which quite frankly is why I support the movement for content publishers to use their own short URL services, rather than rely on others), and encourage you to switch your URL shortener of choice from urlShort to another (such as bit.ly) for the time being (cli.gs has had issues with repeating links).
Once again, my apologies for this unexpected, and unacceptable unavailability. I'll post here again when we're back up. If you have something to say about it, I ask that you please contact HostingZoom with your complaints. Thanks.

A comment on the update "bit.ly struggling a little at the moment" in twitterfeed:
It doesn't seem like a good idea to rely on a service/company who changes their position from closing down, to reopening, to going "open source" in the span of four days. Not to mention that they refuse to join 301works, which is attempting to try and solve some of the problems short URLs offer. – Matt Langston, on August 23, 2009 16:17

Matt Langston shared an idea in twitterfeed on August 23, 2009 00:51:
Custom short URL services for publishers (open source)Has twitterfeed considered adding support for custom domain short URL services? Projects like urlShort, kissabe, and phurl allow publishers to run their own short URL services (helping to improve transparency and reputation in links), and services like awe.sm offer paid/hosted solutions that do this as well. awe.sm is already supported, so I thought the next step to offering content publishers with a great Twitter solution would be adding support for these open source projects.
With urlShort as an example, the API has a standard form (http://example.com/api.php?url=http:/...), and could be implemented by asking the user to enter their domain (example.com), and Twitterfeed could do the rest. Kissabe also offers a built in API, so the same solution could also be used.
Is there anyone else who'd like to see this added to twitterfeed?
Matt Langston replied on August 22, 2009 21:18 to the idea "Needs an API" in Maverick Revolution:
I'm not the admin of fnla.me (it runs urlShort, which mavrev.com maintains), but there is an API, the owner has just removed the link for whatever reason. You may want to check with him before you add support, but it is accessible at http://fnla.me/api.php?url=http://exa... for creation, and http://fnla.me/api.php?short=http://f... for lookup. You can contact him on his site at http://visualrinse.com to make sure he's okay with it (although I'd guess he will be).
It's great to hear that you're looking to support new short URL services.
Note to self: Remove feedback widget from urlShort project code in next version... :P

If there is no .htaccess in your copy of urlShort (if you're on Linux or OS X be sure viewing hidden files is turned on), then you can create an .htaccess file with the details below.
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
ErrorDocument 404 /index.php
ErrorDocument 500 /index.php
ErrorDocument 200 /index.php
