mbond replied on September 28, 2009 15:34 to the idea "Color messages in list according to their topics" in Postbox, Inc.:
Some topics (such as important) warrant being able to see quickly while scrolling.
There are other examples as well (at least in my topic list) that would be useful to see quickly when in the list view.
It would be great if we could assign a color to topics (default would be none when creating new topics). If a topic is colored then the line the it is on in the list view would be shaded with that color.
Of course this, at least partly, also depends on what is happening with the "list view" verses "conversation view" ... would be great o get an update on what you guys plan on doing witht hat.

I need to move a message from one inbox to another inbox in 2 different accounts. When i drag the messages to the proper account it does not switch the folders list so that i can drop it in the proper folder for the new account.

mbond replied on July 29, 2009 14:06 to the question "How much does Postbox cost?" in Postbox, Inc.:
Some people missed my point.
I have no issue with paying for quality software that fills a need that other software does not.
Problem is, postbox doesn't fill that need for me.
1) Tags don't sync automatically across imap servers. you have to enter the tags on each computer you use.
2) No apple script support on Mac, so you can't use it properly with other system tools (iCal, etc ...)
3) Conversation view is lacking, and not smart enough to the point of frustration. Needs tools to be able to merge and separate threads more easily.
4) Searching leaves a lot to be desired ... attaching saved searches to an account, even though they can search across accounts, is a usability nightmare to the point that they were useless for me. They need their own panel.
I can go on and on.
The ideas behind postbox are great. But they are putting ideas in, then adding more features or refining features that are less important for a working email client.
Here is my previous list, from a long time ago, of things that i consider essential before a 1.0 can be released. These are things that would "polish" so that it feels like a "real" email client as well as bring it up to par with what people expect in a real email client.
http://getsatisfaction.com/postbox/topics/wish_list_changes_to_polish_postbox
I had really high hopes for post box. I would GLADLY pay $50 for post box, as well as another $50 at every major x.0 release. A good, high quality, email client is hard to come by. Thunderbird and Mail.App and Outlook are not good or high quality. But they are "polished" ... if Postbox got all the bugs worked out and everything gets refined they COULD have that. Right now, they just aren't there.
A comment on the question "How much does Postbox cost?" in Postbox, Inc.:
$29 for postbox isn't a great value, unfortunately.
It adds little value that Mail.app and Thunderbird 3.0 don't already have for free. And in the case of Mail.app on MacOS X people would be losing a considerable amount of functionality due to the, purposeful, omission of Apple Script support.
Sorry guys. I loved the potential that Postbox had/has ... but "Postbox notifies you and allows you to update the conversation." that's great for a beta product, but a full on 1.0 shouldn't bother you about it and just do it, seamlessly.
There is a thread floating around here somewhere with what I feel a 1.0 release of postbox should include. I stand by that original post. If you can manage all that, before the other companies catch up with a conversation view and tagging ... then it would be worth $30 – mbond, on July 28, 2009 17:20
A comment on the question "Better OS Integration" in Postbox, Inc.:
Its a postbox problem and an Apple problem, but not a MacOS X problem.
1) Postbox: Postbox doesn't support applescript, until they do these types of interactions on the mac will not be possible. Huge problem.
2) Apple Problem: Apple sets up their software (like ical and Pages) to use Mail.App by default via applescript. To get post box working would be a bit of a hack, but would be completely doable if postbox supported applescript.
3) Not a MacOS X problem: MacOS X lets you define your default email client. its the way iCal and Pages do not honor that change that causes issues. This goes back to being a Postbox problem. there is no email client out there that supports applescript well enough that is also popular enough for apple to care enough to fix the problem. Postbox needs to become that mail client, but until they take applescript seriously (and they aren't at this point), that isn't going to happen. – mbond, on July 08, 2009 10:27
mbond replied on June 30, 2009 13:54 to the update "BETA 13 Is Now Available!" in Postbox, Inc.:
Nice job. Looks like you are moving along nicely.
Sadly, it is still missing some features that i require to continue beta testing right now. (absolutely cannot live without properly applescript support right now).
I'm going to try to get a machine up later this week/early next week to play with the changes.

And honestly, with Google Wave coming, i may be moving away from "traditional" email completely ... or at least as much as possible. That is much more akin to what I've been looking for in a communication tool than email. email sucks, it will continue to suck, and all the new breed of clients are doing is adding hacks to an old system.
Postbox just seems to be doing it better than most everyone else at this point (at least their ideas are in the right place).
They will likely continue to do that as well, their priorities are off what mine would be though in their development. Its been a LONG time since there has been an update, i'm curious what R13 will bring us ... must be fairly substantial. ;-). – mbond, on June 18, 2009 15:00
A comment on the question "How much does Postbox cost?" in Postbox, Inc.:
it won't, not for ever.
Doesn't matter. if you think its worth the money when they release it, buy it. don't think about what will come down the line later. If you think like that with technology you won't ever buy anything :-P. – mbond, on June 16, 2009 19:53

I figured this would be the case and I would gladly pay for Postbox if it becomes polished.
http://getsatisfaction.com/postbox/topics/wish_list_changes_to_polish_postbox
that is still my list of things that I would consider essential for a 1.0 release that costs money. I've added comments below that the original post that i feel are essential as well.
I haven't been using/testing postbox because of some of the short comings on that list (most notably the lack of apple script support that my current projects require me to have). – mbond, on June 16, 2009 16:35

you are wanting the hidden preference: pb.conversation_display.max_open_messages
be warned, it screws some things up in Beta 12. Or was that 11? i can't remember which version i was running now.

A comment on the question "where the heck is the "gather button"??" in Postbox, Inc.:
Guess i should really unsubscribe and stop answering questions since i'm not using the client right now ... but ...
the "Gather Button" was replaced with the "Show all button"
If you click on a message that is part of a conversation, to the right of the subject are gray buttons. One of those is "show all" ... the buttons move, aren't shown unless they can be used on that message.
There is a thread around here somewhere asking them to stick these in a standard place and always show them ... but they haven't fixed the issue of them being hard-to-find since at least beta 4 – mbond, on May 26, 2009 17:34
A comment on the idea "AppleScript" in Postbox, Inc.:
That's all well and good, but do to my current project I'm gonna be off Postbox for the foreseeable future.
At the very least, I would need a menu bar icon that displays the current unread count. This is what i'm using with Mail.App until I get my Dock back (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/22042)
I'll likely take the time (after i get the project going full steam) to write an applescript later and display the changes with Geektool, but for now cluttering my menubar is fine.
Sorry. but, for at least the next 3 or 4 months no apple script and no menu bar icon == no postbox testing.
If you throw a menubar icon in, shoot me an email and i'll start testing again ;-). – mbond, on May 22, 2009 21:21
mbond replied on May 22, 2009 14:08 to the idea "AppleScript" in Postbox, Inc.:
Wow .. you guys marked applescript as "no plans to do this?"
seriously?
I suddenly feel like i've wasted a LOT of time with this application. I'm in dire need of applescript at the moment and am using Mail.app because of it.
Honestly, if this doesn't change soon i don't see Postbox in my future. I've been waiting patiently for applescript support, and i really do NEED it.-
mbond started following the idea "AppleScript" in Postbox, Inc..
mbond shared an idea in Postbox, Inc. on May 21, 2009 11:35:
Menu Bar icon with message count and context menu.It would be great if there was an option to have a menu bar icon on Mac OS X. One of the icons that sit up in the upper right hand corner.
The icon should be completely optional, and show the same unread count that the Dock icon shows. (It should actually show a CORRECT unread count, but it might as well show the same thing as the dock icon until the dock icon shows the correct unread count ;-P )
I have several reasons for wanting this. one of which is that I want to replace the Dock with Dragthing again (i used to do this all the time), but until postbox supports apple script there is no way to get an unread count into dragthing or anything else.
Also, more and more the menu bar is being used for context menus and notifications (look at adium, ichat, dragthing, time machine, and MANY other programs that also have dock icons).
Adding a menu bar icon isn't really that hard, i did it for an application a while back, took about 45 minutes to do it nicely, and it can really add a lot of functionality.
A comment on the idea "Sender's photo at the right side of the header" in Postbox, Inc.:
that would probably be the problem then. I'd say 90% of the people in my address book's name don't match between their email name and facebook name – mbond, on May 20, 2009 00:49
