Sync history across computers!Ever since the more recent updates of Firefox, I absolutely love the fact that it searches my entire history, along with bookmarks, etc. while I type something in the address bar.
I can find things immediately. I don't have to bookmark every single thing. If I decide I want to go back to something I was looking for recently, I just type it in. I don't want to delete my history.
I spend hours surfing online, at home, at work, at school, etc. across computers.
I would love it if XMarks would sync history from different computers.
[As an option that you can select, due to privacy concerns]
Let's say I had this great "stream" of websites and webpages I was visiting while at work, and I want to go back to it. I would just have to type it in, and it would come up,

Unfortunately, every time you add a file or folder to the toolbar, it will show up on all toolbars.
What I did is a made different folders:
Home, Work, Shared
My "Home" computer is only for my home computer.
My "Work" folder is for my work computers.
"Shared" is for files that I want to see on all computers.
mechanesthesia reported a problem in Twitter on August 14, 2009 21:48:
Old tweets not showing up in searches and corresponding rant!Any tweets/updates older than a month are not showing up! Not only that, but Twitter, in true Orwellian style make it looks like those tweets never even existed. It shows a message like "nothing found" but what it fails to tell you is that nothing is found because they only search for what you posted in the last month. Also gone into the "Orwellian memory hole" is "advanced search." Before the last update, you were able to do advanced search, but even that didn't work. It let you limit your search by date range. But it STILL wouldn't show anything past a month! So why even include that option! Now it seems to have just disappeared.
What kind of stupid idea is this? I don't even think a month is even that long for it to be considered "old." I think this whole "forced" expiration of tweets or better word for it: "planned obsolescence" is just stupid. I really don't understand why I can't search MY OWN Twitter site for something I posted a month ago. I really don't understand what is the point of it? Trying to keep things fresh?
WELL THAT'S WHY PEOPLE LOOK AT THE FIRST SEARCH RESULTS IN THE FIRST PAGE AND OLD ONES ARE AT THE END!
Maybe having "real-time search" works faster or better by limiting the searches?
Okay, that's fine, but what about giving us the SIMPLE option of clicking on something that says "search for older tweets."
I should be able to see all of my tweets when I do "from:myusername."
Is this simplicity, minimalism, or just plain laziness?
I think this is one of the reasons why the younger demographic has not embraced Twitter.
Twitter is trying to "repackage" itself as some kind of "master news feed" instead of the social network that it is. I don't understand why Twitter cannot cater to both, people that go to Twitter for news and updates on elections and Iran and people that use it for the main purpose it was made for: a social network/blog.
What is a blog? A blog is the internet version of a journal. Twitter is a "microblog" site where you make "small journal entries."
There are two types of blogs, news blogs and personal blogs.
But apparently Twitter doesn't know this. They want to focus on "news blogs" with their naive fantasy that we are all "mini news reporters" reporting activities around the world.
I'm sorry, I don't live in Iran, I didn't sign up to be an international reporter, I just want to write what's on my mind, in my life, and keep a record of it.
Apparently Twitter only wants you to write status updates about disposable news stories that are already "yesterday's news" within a few hours and stupid "pointless babble" about what you are eating or where you're going right now. Nothing with any depth or worth.
Forget haikus, interesting thoughts/insights, notes to yourself.
Twitter is the equivalent of someone who suffers from long-term memory loss, just living based on our short term memory, everything being new, and not retaining any information and "storing" any memories for later.
I really liked the idea of Twitter when I started using it. It was this fresh new "tool" which people used in different ways. When Twitter was still new, the big thing was finding different ways to used Twitter. Everyone had a different way of using Twitter. And there are many web articles around with fun and interesting ways to use Twitter.
I thought that I would use Twitter to keep track of my personal thoughts, ideas, goals, and "to-dos" as well as to share interesting things I find, like videos or news and such [but that was secondary].
I created hashtags to keep track of my tweets and organize them, such as:
#todo, #musrec: music recommendations from friends, #notes, #goals, #ideas, #thingstoget, #lookinto: things I wanted to research on, etc.
These are all things which I was not planning on doing "in a month or less" and frankly being imposed some kind of deadline really pisses me off.
I have bookmarks and notes scribbled all around my house of things that I want to do or read about later on when I have the time or some time in the future. I'm sure everyone does this. I wanted Twitter to be an organization of all these things. Something as simple as "I want to take a French class some time" or "#todo Read through some of your college textbooks" are not meant to be done "in a month or less" but are still valid in keeping track of your life.
I was using it in this way for a few months, until recently I found that things were just MISSING! That got me so mad, I felt like I was scammed in some way.
I spent all this time and energy putting my ideas into Twitter to organize things and create hashtags, and now I can't even find anything without scrolling through 60+ pages.
So to Twitter, I have to say, thanks for the big let-down and for alienating people just to change your "image."-

XMarks doesn't differentiate Toolbars for Diferent ProfilesProblem with Xmarks:
It seems that a basic problem is that Xmarks does not differentiate between different toolbars.
All the toolbars are the same regardless of the profile or computer you're on.
So Xmarks forces you to have the same toolbar for all profiles, which is impractical.
Either that or I'm doing something wrong, because whenever I add something to my toolbar, it shows on ALL of my profiles.-

Xmarks should have a feature that detects duplicatesFeature request:
FIND DUPLICATES! :)
So I've been hoarding bookmarks for almost 8 years now, and they are well into the thousands. It's way too overwhelming to organize, but I've been attempting to over the years. I would love a feature that will be able to detect duplicates, then it tells you the folders they are in, and if you would like to delete it [sometimes things are in separate folders on purpose, but sometimes they're not]
mechanesthesia replied on July 28, 2009 06:11 to the idea "New bookmarks private to the current profile only, as an option?" in Xmarks:
Also, I see a problem here. At work, I use primarily my toolbar because it keeps everything organized.
I have a folder on my toolbar named "bookmarks" and next to it about 5-6 sites that I regularly use for work. "Bookmarks" is just for random things that I find while surfing or sites that I like to go to on my break, like YouTube.
But the problem is, it seems like XMarks tries to sync all the toolbars as one toolbar, instead of having separate toolbars per profile. I think that's where the problem lies.
mechanesthesia replied on July 28, 2009 06:10 to the idea "New bookmarks private to the current profile only, as an option?" in Xmarks:
Any updates on this?
It's really frustrating. I just found a bunch of porn sites that just appeared on my work folder!
THIS IS NOT GOOD! Sometimes I go days bookmarking anywhere from 5 to 12 bookmarks daily. I have thousands of bookmarks saved up since 2001. I never really got around to organizing them completely, though I've attempted. But they are like my "treasures." :)
Right now I have around a few hundred bookmarks, and that's just half a year, I still haven't uploaded my MAIN bookmark folder.
I hope using something like this will help me.
But come on, it is absurd for someone to be at home bookmarking or sorts of crazy things and have them automatically show up at work!-

NEVER MIND!
I got it to work.
This might be a problem that might need to be addressed.
I had changed my XMarks password from my home computer because I forgot the password. In my work computer it still had my old password saved, and it was saved under "remember password" in the settings field.
The thing is, as long as you have the "wrong password" saved here as "remembered," even if you put the "correct" password in the "change profile" box, it still won't work.
mechanesthesia replied on July 28, 2009 05:36 to the problem "Can't change profile in browsers foxmarks setting panel" in Xmarks:
I am having the same exact problem.
I go to Tools -> Xmarks -> Xmarks Settings -> Profile -> Change Button
Then the profile "drop down" menu is disabled.
I type in my password and nothing happens.
I press "tab" and nothing.
I click on "OK." It just exists me from the dialog box.
This is very frustrating, because it's a main functionality of xmarks, the ability to assign profiles to different computers.-
