Doesn't the embedded VLC thingy carry over VLC settings? Have you tried playing the files with VLC and changing the audio output settings and copying a working configuration over? ?-

POSSIBLE WORKAROUND:
OK a little update - i found that if I play a video it will not have sound. However if hit the Stop icon and the play it again the sound works and Miro shows up in the mixer as expected.
MORE INFO FOR DEVS:
I have a quad-core Q600 on a Nvidia 790i chipset motherboard from EVGA. The soundcard driver is the latest from EVGA - Realtek High Definition Audio driver by Realktek Semiconductor Corp v6.0.1.5548, 1/15/2008. I dont think it is in fact the driver - I suspect its some sort of threading bug that exhibits itself due the multiple cores since it fails to start the first time but starts afterwards (if there are threads involved and I see 21 threads in my Miro.exe process - it could be a race condition between the player and a sound initialization task...). I am running Vista x64 Service Pack 1 and I have the K-Lite Codec Pack for x64 installed.

There are actually quite a few active Vista specific tickets in our bugzilla system that need to be addressed – just take a look – the best answer I can give you is that they will be fixed as soon as possible.
One thing you can do to help speed up the process is to write a detailed report or provide additional commentary to these bugs in the bugzilla system so the people making these fixes can stay in direct contact with you and work through the problem faster.

I also have this problem, no sound at all in Miro. I played a few of the videos in Winamp and hear the audio in each. Worked yesterday then just stopped.
Also using Vista (Service Pack 1 installed) and got a Realtek soundcard – SilentDefender, on July 02, 2008 23:07-
