meng started following the idea "Create a new resident packet, and include maps and transit routes!" in TransitCamp.
meng replied on February 25, 2008 01:39 to the question "How do we raise awareness of our local transit system?" in TransitCamp:
On every interstate, signs say "San Francisco 40 miles". The electronic ones say "San Francisco 40 minutes".
In Philadelphia, the middle of every block has a signpost, and every signpost has a map showing "you are here".
See http://www.upenn.edu/almanac/v48/n08/...
I wish the signs at bus stops showed
a) a map, with the route highlighted
b) major destinations, each one N minutes away
So:
Welcome to Route 22.
You are HERE.
Palo Alto University Ave: 20m
Stanford Shopping Center: 15m
Downtown Mountain View: 10m

It's not just a bus: it's part of a system.
Every bus that goes by could say on the side and back: "Did you miss me? I come again in: 15 minutes."
In phase 1, the "15" would probably be hardcoded to the official route frequency.
When the 21st century arrives, the "15 minutes" could be updated live by nextbus.
Are there any cities that do this today? I feel like so many bright ideas at TransitCamp are (potential) reinventions of wheels.
