Michael Hutchinson started following the problem "My tweets are not shown in public timeline. But "Protect my updates" is unchecked." in Twitter.
Michael Hutchinson reported a problem in Twitter on October 27, 2008 08:46:
Same old problem: tweets missing from my timeline.I verified that tweets are missing from my collective timeline when viewed on twitter.com, again, from at least one of the people I'm following. Not an @reply, and I'm not blocked. The missing tweets I've verified show up on search.twitter.com, and when I look at their individual timeline, and were from twelve hours ago and four hours ago. Of the two tweets this person posted four hours ago, one shows up in my timeline, one does not. Who knows how many more are missing from everyone I'm following. I reported missing tweets five months ago as well, and other people have reported missing tweets since, but this problem never gets solved.

Michael Hutchinson marked one of François' replies in netvibes as useful. François replied to the problem "Blank Screen".

Hmm... Now it is working in Firefox (it wasn't yesterday), but still not working in Safari version 3.1.2 (5525.20.1). – Michael Hutchinson, on July 16, 2008 11:28

No firewall or proxy. Yes, using that link I can see the default screen. Yes, still have the same problem. When I view the source it looks like everything is there, it just isn't rendering. Tested just now with Safari version 3.1.2 (5525.20.1). – Michael Hutchinson, on July 16, 2008 10:28

Blank ScreenNetvibes looks like it is loading, then I get a blank grey screen. I've tried Safari and Firefox, with pop up blockers disabled. When I go to m.netvibes.com, my feeds are still there.-

Missing TweetAre missing tweets on the website a known problem today? Someone I'm following posted a tweet over six hours ago and it still isn't showing up on my website feed, but when I go to their page it still says that I am following them and the tweet is there.

@mdy
A year ago @blaine reported that Twitter was handling 600 transactions/second, and that traffic was increasing quickly. They got at least $5.4 million in funding last year, and so they aren't starving, running out of their apartments.
I'm not questioning the hard work, intelligence, or enthusiasm of the developers.
However, I am questioning the company's overall pre-planning that goes on before these maintenance windows and their review process, as well as their lack of communication. It is not like this is the first time this has happened, as they have had problems with this display issue after maintenance before. I thought this was one reason they brought on @jack last December, but now it is mid-April and nothing appears to have changed.
The argument that we have no right to voice our concerns because we don't pay for the service is ridiculous. Most websites do not charge for content because they don't take charge the customer directly, but make it up on the back end through advertising or other means. If cnn.com, or any other website you use regularly but don't pay for reported inaccurate results for two days without even putting up a disclaimer on the front page (which is really what Twitter is doing by showing compromised streams), would you still say we shouldn't complain? No one outside of Twitter really knows how they are going to make money off of it eventually, if they even know, but I do know this: Twitter without the people using Twitter is pretty much worthless.

Twitter:
You need to step up to the plate and be more communicative about this situation. A short post more than a day ago is not a sufficient response from a customer relations perspective, and your really doing yourself, and your users, a disservice. As soon as you realized the problem wouldn't be corrected immediately, you should have put up a notice just like you did for the original maintenance window, notifying everyone that the web-based and api tweet display was compromised, and referring them to a web site that would be maintained at least every six hours or so with more current information regarding the situation and the steps you were taking.
By not taking professional command of the communication regarding this issue you're letting this thing spin out of control.

I think the most frustrating thing is that we have no way of knowing if anyone at Twitter is even aware of this problem yet. From what I can see of their own tweets, it doesn't look like it, and the twitter_status account doesn't show anything either (as usual). One would hope after what they did last night that someone would be monitoring this site for reports of any problems, since this is, I guess, the official support mechanism. And if anyone is monitoring this site, we need an update.
