My bio has quotes in it, and twitter changed one " to "
Ridiculous! Also, as of last night, any tweets I have that include quote marks get truncated. VERY frustrating. I think it's a bug. Worse, everyone at twitter appears asleep at the wheel.
Evan @ev on twitter isn't responding, and neither is @biz, nor are any of the developers that are on this project: @rael, @mrtall, @vlourenco or @bs . It is as though twitter is asleep at the wheel.
A search on twitter at search.twitter.com for @twitter reveals many upset people. If they do not start their complaint with @twitter, if they put @twitter in the middle, @twitter won't see it.
I tweet many quoted passages, and I can't do that until twitter is fixed. Are you listening, twitter? Your "front-end" fix which as Evan said wasn't supposed to do anything, has messed up everything.
To quote the Twitter blog, "The scope of this project was limited to light-weight front-end work." That is *not* what has happened. This is a major problem and Twitter appears to be ignoring it.

Don't forget ampersand (&), that seems to do it too. In fact, every character on this list will probably cause the issue: HTML Latin-1 Entities.

This has been happening to me constantly, and it's making me crazy. It's frustrating because I'm just writing my updates as I always have, using characters I've used in the past with no trouble. Now that my tweets are truncating, not only is it hard for me to tell why, but there's no warning that anything funky is going to happen until AFTER I post and see it's screwed up. What a pain. Do I have to regress to kindergarten-level writing to get around this, limiting myself only to letters and commas and periods? (Oops, that was a question mark; how many characters will one of those set me back? Uh-oh, a semi-colon. Yikes, and hyphens. I'm screwed.)

Now *that's* remarkably self-consistent of Twitter! ;-) – Eridanus, on September 20, 2008 21:16

The Sat. Sep. 20th. entry at http://status.twitter.com states:
Missing Tweets?
We are currently in the process of re-balancing our timeline cache. You may see missing Tweets in your timeline. This should be entirely cleared up by tomorrow afternoon.

I am having the same problem as the original poster today. A tweet from person I follow still has not shown up on my page after more than six hours. No, it was not an @reply to me or anyone else. I received the same person's previous tweets from last night, just not the most recent one. I have been able to post a tweet myself and also received a tweet from another person, after the missing one should have arrived. When I visit the person's page, the tweet is there, and I am still following him (not blocked).

Well, my timeline was working again up until last night -- the problem came back. Seems like this problem is getting bigger -- I stmbled upon this thread... Same problem, 60+ people:
Why Older button is not working?

(I suggest all in this thread move/follow that thread.)
Someone in that thread proposed that Twitter is actually doing this intentionally to lower their server load. Difficult to prove, but makes sense.

Not so happy. Really not so happy.
Just checked into Twitter as of 7:45 p.m., and can't read past page 1. I also checked in on my cell phone earlier, and couldn't get past page 1 then either.
I also like how no one official from Twitter has stepped into help. That's really nice.
Off to try @bigboxcar suggestion.

mimi-update on my situation... This morning, I did a bunch of things to my account, and I have my timeline working as it is intended to work. But, I'm guessing this is a coincidence and will have the same symptoms tonight...
Here's what I did:
1- changed my password. I noticed that sometimes when I "sign out" of twitter, and close the browser, then open it up and go directly to twitter.com/home, the page loads as if I were logged in. That's prob'ly not supposed to be like that. So, I changed my password.
2- I unfollowed about 10 profiles thinking that if I eliminate some of the heavy tweeters (like twitterfeed type profiles) I could actually see MORE of my friend's tweets on that first (and only) page of only 20 tweets.
3) I deleted my "device" updates (clicked "Delete and start over") and verified my cellphone from scratch.
There you have it. Hope that proves to help the others with the same problem!

This is pretty ridiculous. I'm not going to use this space to threaten that I've had enough with twitter, and that twitter sucks, etc. I've seen some people doing that. I like the service. A lot. I'll pony up my time troubleshooting to allow a company I like get through some tough growing pains. Maybe I'm not a big enough twitter addict yet. And I've used it when it worked as expected, so I can see how useful it can be. This is indeed annoying, but I'm not throwing chairs (yet.) I humbly suggest using some of that new investment $$ on proper customer support in the near future. Like having someone get back to a user who places a trouble ticket (like I did). So far, I have not heard a word.

I've had the same problem for over a *week* now. I can't go past page 1 of my timeline--which makes for an incredibly sucky Twitter experience since I can't be glued to the computer 24 hours a day to follow my timeline. *sarcasm*
No one else on my timeline has the same problem.
I have my Twitter set up where I can post/read from my cell phone, but other than that, I don't log in from anywhere else to access Twitter--which counts out the suggestion @bigboxcar shared.
I've even cleared out my cache--still can't get past page 1 on my timeline.
I'm accessing Twitter on Firefox 2.0.0.16 for Mac, if that makes a difference.
Big thanks for any and all help!
