Michael replied on November 18, 2009 18:01 to the question "lifehacker.com ban" in Gawker Media Tech:
It looks like your account was still in the audition phase and you commented on the 1st and 2nd Google Wave Invite articles without apparently reading the article text itself, which stated in bold:
"Finally, it takes our interns hours to admin comments every day, and these threads wreak havoc on their efforts, so if you don't already have an approved commenter account, please don't comment on this thread."
I've re-enabled your account to audition.
Michael replied on November 16, 2009 04:38 to the problem "Approval of account?" in Gawker Media Tech:
Accounts in the auditioning phase are approved by moderators who go through the pending accounts and review comments to make sure the commenters are contributing and not trolling. I only see 2 comments in your history, so the moderators are waiting for you to post more comments before they make a decision about the account.

Your account is still pending and I noticed you posted today, so it looks like your ability to comment is working. – Michael, on November 09, 2009 18:13

Michael replied on October 30, 2009 02:59 to the question "account not approved on kotaku?" in Gawker Media Tech:
Is it possible you had another account under a different username that you were using to audition? I only see two very recent comments on the danielmenthros account, so it doesn't look like you've been commenting for a while on this account. If you do want to audition with this account, I would recommend making more comments with it. This wouldn't have anything to do with a problem with your computer though.
Michael replied on October 28, 2009 02:48 to the question "Why are comments "not enabled" for my account?" in Gawker Media Tech:
It looks like you got banned for your last comment, "*yawn*," which violates the following part of the comment code:
Don't comment for the sake of commenting.
Commenters who only say "First!" or "Nice site" on an open thread have no business hitting that "Post" button at all. Further, only spammers comment for the sake of adding their name and URL to a web page. Useless comments will gain you the reputation for being a useless commenter.
Feel free to read the full comment code here: http://lifehacker.com/126654/geek-to-...
I have re-enabled comments on the account.

A comment on the idea "Commenting System + Account Approval" in Gawker Media Tech:
I'm sorry that you feel that way, but it's not an accurate depiction of how Gizmodo's comment system works. Gizmodo shares its commenting system with every other Gawker Media website. It doesn't have to do with a decision made specifically by Gizmodo editors for the purposes of silencing people with whom they disagree. – Michael, on October 23, 2009 03:03

A comment on the problem "Can't comment on Kotaku..." in Gawker Media Tech:
Complaining doesn't necessarily mean you'll get approved. Complaining just brings you to our attention so we can specifically look at your account and see if approval is warranted. If the comments on an account are trolling, racist, "slow news day, eh?", blatantly self-promotional, etc then the account may not get approved. If you tell me what your displayname is, I can look at your account. – Michael, on October 02, 2009 23:37

Michael replied on September 22, 2009 17:04 to the problem "All my comments have been deleted from my profile" in Gawker Media Tech:
There are a few things that might be going on.
If the account was still in the audition phase when the comments were made, they may not appear when you look at your comment history.
It's unlikely the comments were deleted because they would all have to be highly offensive for that to happen and the account would have been banned when the first offensive comments were noticed by a moderator. So if you were making highly offensive comments, then you wouldn't have been able post for over a month. So that's unlikely.
Another possibility is if the account you're signing into now is not the same as the one you were using before. This is a common mix up.
What is the username on your account? I'll look at it and see if I can see a comment history in the system.
Michael replied on September 19, 2009 18:28 to the idea "Commenting System + Account Approval" in Gawker Media Tech:
I understand your frustration. I would have to say that the benefits of the system aren't as apparent since you can't see all of the comments that don't make it. I review emails daily from people wanting their commenting privileges reactivated after they have left comments with racist statements, sexually explicit statements, personal attacks on other commenters, et cetera. I have seen threads where the offensive comments vastly outnumber the ones that are actually on topic and civilized. Were the current system not in place, the discussion threads would become nigh unreadable considering the amount of spam and trolling that would overwhelm the legitimate comments.
Michael replied on September 19, 2009 04:42 to the problem "Comments don't appear on Lifehacker" in Gawker Media Tech:
If you recently created the profile, then the profile is likely still in the auditioning phase. All commenters on an Gawker Media site go through an audition phase where their comments don't immediately appear on the website but are held in a pending status while awaiting a moderator's review. This system is in place to prevent trolls and spammers from having free reign to ruin the experience of readers.
Michael replied on September 13, 2009 20:09 to the problem "Am I being censored?" in Gawker Media Tech:
Every commenter on any Gawker Media site goes through an audition phase before being allowed to comment without review. It's a procedure put in place to prevent trolls and spammers and people lacking social skills from ruining the comments section for the rest of the readers.
Since this was the first comment on your account, it is automatically held for review by the system. You're not being singled out. There's no telling how long it may take to have the comment reviewed before it might appear. There are quite a few (and very long) pending comments on that particular article since it covers a topic about which so many are passionate.
