I have the same problem aliencam. I'm luckier in the sense that IDC only loads after the main content is finished but it still delays the correct displaying of the sidebars.
The problem is that the comment counts are quering the IDC database each time to check how many comments each posts have. On a blog's main page where the most recent 10 posts exist, it needs to query 10 times. Add to that the IDC widgets, and the time inrceases even more.
The best thing to do would be to allow somehow the IDC scripts to load last in the page. If that's not an option, then the DB speeds need to be improved.

I am having this same problem, it makes loading my blog's main page almost impossible. I just send everyone my RSS link instead.
I think the way to fix this (not that the end user can just do it if you use something like the wordpress plugin) is to make the scripts load LAST on the page.
You solve the exact same problem with a twitter bar on a blog by putting the HTML code where you want it, and then executing the scripts after the last line in your footer. This causes the entire website to load, and THEN the twitter bar. If we could do this with intensedebate it would not cause a problem with anything. (Usually people read at least 5 seconds of a post/article before wanting to post a comment anyway, so it would be okay for comments to load last.)
instead, IntenseDebate (for me) loads before my right navigation bar, which means you can't get to any other pages until the comments are finished loading (which often takes FOREVER.)
lets just hope the IntenseDebate team can fix this soon so nobody stops using it!

btw it looks like the same problem is happening here:

I am using FF3 and Wordpress 2.5.1 and the plugin. my blog URL is http://blog.aliencam.net

So because you are missing (or rather, don't have it complete) this, you'd rather go back to the horrible comment system of blogger? The benefits of IDC over it are tremendous.

At basic Blogger comment system I had a widget that shows the top commenters. – xuefang, on July 06, 2008 10:29

Did your old system show the top commenters? – db0, on July 06, 2008 10:16

I think it's not good that only registered commenters can get to the top list. I can't assume that my every reader will register to intense debate. I like using intense debate but i would like to show off my loyal commenters. maybe i have to get back to old system? – xuefang, on July 05, 2008 19:10

Indeed the widget shows only people who are registered, Other ways to track anonymous posters can be subject to abuse.
I don't think there is a way to remove yourself – db0, on July 05, 2008 15:31

Michael asked a question in Intense Debate on March 13, 2008 19:08:
How are top 10 Commenters determined?I would really like to know the formula for determining the top 10 commenters using the widget.
How does reputation play a role?
Or is it more of the number of comments?
If reputation matters, would commenters reputation built from other blogs affect their standing on my top 10?
Would commenters without an Intense Debate account or Oped ID be included?
It would be nice to have the actual algorithm. Thanks in advance.
