Either they've buried IM entirely but don't want to admit it (hoping perhaps that some other service will come along and then they can abdicate responsibility to it without admitting they abandoned it) or they're trying to hide something. Otherwise, why not have some blog updates from the developers who are said to be working on restoring IM? I know *I* would be interested in what they're doing to try to solve the nearly-4-month-old outage and perpetual unchanging "Offline - working on additional capacity" claim on the status page...
Getting quite cynical about the lack of news on the two features that got me to sign up for Twitter in the first place (IM and Tracking...)

Does any one else find it hilarious that it still says that the company is working on the problem?
We know Twitter isn't working on this. And we know it's a pretty good possibility that they never will.
But until I can find something that will send me IMs as reminders, I'll keep bothering them about fixing it.

The fact that Twitter still doesn't reply to this post about IM, or any other post concering IM, and that their status page only gets updated when they figure out another database problem, should clearly state their position on IM. Really, it's not like letting us know the status somehow helps their competition. I'm sure they're still coding the new IM content.
However, I'm still wondering how they intend to make income on this concept.

I just went with TwitterFox. I don't expect IM to be fixed any time this year.

There are gadgets, apps and SMS tools to update/read twitter in a similar manner as IM. On my XP box (which is going away), IM would be easiest. On the Vista box (which I am setting up as time allows) I'll be using, a sidebar gadget that will suffice just fine. (I already use a gadget on the Vista box at home.)

Finally had a chance to try Twitt'd. It's not as real-time as I'd like (I suspect it's making API calls so it has to spread them out), but so far it's serving me quite well. I feel re-connected. 8-) – mdy, on August 15, 2008 10:46

Saw a couple of tweets today regarding IM.
lstoll: @jack Even for IM? Personally I was using IM instead of SMS when it was there. And there is evidently a negotiation point, cuz US is there. about 15 hours ago
jack: @lstoll we're intent on getting im back (for free). Will take some time. about 15 hours ago

So, here's what I just learned: Due to cost problems, Twitter has ended SMS service entirely in the UK. It costs them $1000 per person to send tweets via txt message (which sounds archaic)
Here's the article from TechCrunch: http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/08/13/...
Here's Twitter's statement: http://blog.twitter.com/2008/08/chang...
You'll notice there's NO mention about the service not currently running in the US... lovely. Glad we waited around for this..

Not as worried about the schedule to get it working as the total, blatant, obvious and intentional lack of updates on the status of IM in Twitter. It's as if they thing ping.fm and other third-party tools are sufficient to replace something that will make them a profitable business. – robotfrog, on August 14, 2008 04:44

Hello. If your pressing need is the ability to update your Twitter status via IM, there is a third-party service at http://ping.fm that lets you do this. I use the service myself. The beta code for new sign-ups regularly changes, but for now it's "pingitlikeitshot" (without quotes) – mdy, on August 12, 2008 11:01

Is it really too much to ask Twitter to provide its own solutions? No problem with outside services, but I'm not entirely hip to having to spread myself any thinner on more login IDs and passwords out there. – robotfrog, on August 12, 2008 05:50

I agree with @mollask:
"I don't believe Twitter is actually working on restoring IM."
The fact that they are relying on outside services to try and fill the gap is a poor business model. Look, they cannot even get a stable system in place to handle the traffic, nor can they seem to restore features easily. At times, it sounds like they are even unsure as to why things happen.
Good luck, Twitter. I'll still keep checking on other people's tweets once in a while, but you're time of innovation is quickly passing you by.

agrees with @notBritWhen two months passed, I assumed (for my sanity) that it's gone forever.
and 5 dozen others: I don't believe Twitter is actually working on restoring IM. I believe that Alert Thingy and Twitterriffic are adequate replacements in Twitter's eyes. What's frustrating to me (on top of not being able to quickly view only certain people I follow and quickly tweet w/o loading another program or browser window/tab) is that there's not a great Mini-blog/SocialNetworking/140CharRealTimeStatus (MB/SN/140C) offering out there that's better than Twitter.
I was very impressed 8 months ago when I tried this "new" technology. But am now very disappointed in Geekdom. No one has created a new and improved MB/SN/140C since March when IM went down. If we're pissed, why don't we improve it. It's not all Twitter's fault. We've not moved on to something else. We've not capitalized. We've not made it better for ourselves. We've not innovated.
That all said, I honestly do wish Twitter the best of luck. It's gotta be hard for them to run a service with out revenue. I've done it. I know.

As a new user I received the following welcome message:
Did you know you can send and receive Twitter updates via mobile texting, instant message, or the web? To do that, you'll want to visit your settings page (and you'll want to invite some friends).
Activate Phone & IM: http://twitter.com/devices
I've been a member for 5 minutes and before I've ever used the service I've been directed to this topic which doesn't fill me with confidence!!!
For the record I haven't even added a "tweet" yet!

The only ETA I've seen is in a few days, which was said back on May 23.
Seriously, if you're going to fix it then fix it. If you're not, then just say so.
But all of this jerking around of the users is just bad form.
You'd think that 62 unhappy faces (50 more than any other face) would get the message across. I say we start submitting requests over at Twitter's Help page until they get it fixed.
