I think this is a must for google talk.
In Venezuela, everybody loves blackberry (bb) because of the bb messenger (best known as the pin). Even 7 years old kids own bbs, or want to own one. All because of the ability to chat through the bb messenger avoiding the carrier SMS fees. They all prefer to pay a monthly fee for the bb data plan instead of pay for every message. Even more, they all love the ability to "chat" to several friends simultaneously, and the confidence they get from the "delivered and read" confirmations they get off every single message they sent with the bb messaging.
Bottom line, mobile messaging is huge. BB messaging is going to hit roof at some point because it only works among BBs. People want to have the freedom of buying whatever phone they like. So google talk ought to exploit its "openess" culture so they can develop google talk application for every phone (specially iphone), so they can become the "the facto" mobile messaging application. Google can do as well as bb on messaging but they can offer interoperability on top of it. Interoperability among different brands of phones (apple, nokia, lg, etc...) or different network technologies (wimax, gsm, cdma, etc...).-
