A comment on the idea "Some other sites that would be good to include..." in The Whuffie Bank:
I also see that *non* memebership of a site should have _almost_ zero efffect on your Whuffie.
I see a small negative for non-participation would be acceptable for most people if it applied only to people with "high" whuffie (i.e those who won't notice it currently, but who, if they stop participating at their current level, their Whuffie would fall). Also this is how i understand whuffie to work in Cory's novel that inspired the idea :) – Mike bradshaw, on September 20, 2009 11:55

Some other sites that would be good to include...GetSatisfaction - No brainer this one, has reputation markers built in!
Other microblogging services (laconica, Jaiku etc) - not everyone is on (or even likes) twitter!
Disqus.com - contributions in terms of number of comments?
Amazon.com reviews
Wikipedia - number of contributied pages? number of changes removed?
Delicious & Twine

Only allow pre-defined interests? It seems the sight will only allow you to enter interests that are already on some list, rather than makeing the fields free-form.

Interesting idea. I would say it is better to get replies and DM's from Twitter, and comments from replies to Facebook status updates.
Also i hope that someone at BuddyCloud towers is aware of http://openmicroblogging.org/

Preview mode for goups and userscurrently, you have to join a group to see what is happening in it and then leave if it is not what you thought it was.
By being able to preview the group, you can see if it might be interesting and join it and also how actice it is and who the memebers are.
regarding preview of users, this would help when looking at the "nearby" list, as you could see their real name, group membership and possibly current location name.

2 way linkage with Google Latitudecreate an interface with the new Google Latitude.
Buddycloud is there when you need fast and light (ie on mobile), and Google can do the maps bit (which is expensive and in the end not as interesting as the status & location stuff)

A comment on the question "Question/suggestion about viewing users online/offline" in buddycloud:
could i suggest you put this up on the blog?
it is this little "differences" that make new users get annoyed as you have broken their mental model.
i have to say i agree with your basic idea, but Liron has a point in that the app does look IM like (and of course has XMPP underneath it all!). – Mike bradshaw, on December 15, 2008 17:13
