Discover,
That is the million dollar question for us as well. We are working hard behind the scenes to bring the site to a condition that can handle the much larger user base we anticipate as well as to support the many new features we have planned for the user experience.
Until that transition is completed, we feel it is best to limit the number of folks using the site so that current participants have appropriate service levels.
If there are any people you feel shouldn't wait, do let us or Ace know and we will see if we can't extend them an invitation.

mike_miley shared an idea in Brightkite on May 30, 2008 03:47:
could you add a "Local" map view as default?I'd like to see an additional map: area view to zoom in on local friends without trying to "aim" google maps. I am lucky enough to have friends all over the US but most of the time I want to use the map to see those within 10 to 20 miles of my current location. Since the map now defaults to the entire country, I end up spending lots of time zooming in on the Chicago area. This takes enough time that I am beginning to avoid the map all together.
Thanks for considering it!
