A comment on the problem "iSight hangs Delicious Library 2" in Delicious Monster:

Yep, I know. Part of Spring Cleaning -- really(!!!) ugly code. I had hoped the "Find Duplicate Files" utility in the suite would be useful, but it's so slow as to be practically unusable. (Wonder if it's done in AppleScript :-)
Not at all like your code :-)

Bingo! 2.3.2 fixes the iSight hang for me. Thanks, William, Jessie, et al! – Mike Wirth, on October 31, 2009 05:52

Here are two console logs: one without a hang (adding a book before opening iSight window) and one with. Both include the startup message for DL. Very interesting!!! Note the dual definition of class DAVAdapter. (Could this be because I have the Xcode development environment installed?)

    Issued at DL startup:
    ---------------------------
10/27/09 10:35:24 PM [0x0-0x476476].com.delicious-monster.library2[48449] objc[48449]: Class DAVAdapter is implemented in both /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DAVKit.framework/Versions/A/DAVKit and /Applications/Delicious Library 2.app/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/DotMacKit.framework/Versions/A/DotMacKit. One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.

Note that no error messages(!) appear when attempting to open the iSight window; DL just goes busy forever. If it would be helpful, I could kill it at that point and send you the report (stack backtrace, etc.)

Console log (without a hang: startup and add a book by title search first -- sorry for all the SpringCleaning trash :-)

Bingo! After a reboot, the workaround of manually adding a book by typing in the ISBN does "something" that subsequently allows the iSight camera window to open without delay on my system, too.

Rats. Tried adding an item (both a blank entry and a "search for book by name" add) and then opening the iSight window. No joy. Beachball.

Running Snow Leopard, DL 2.3 (installed today). Hmm...maybe I need a restart. Will try that.

Whoops! Didn't make it clear that I'm talking about your iPhone app (where, when I'm out in the field, looking around a used book sale, and trying to determine whether or not I have a more recent version of a particular book, this problem is particularly frustrating.)

Should we start another thread or tag this one somehow?

    1. Please skip the foul language folks.
    2. Having been in the software business, I know the crush of priorities and the hazard of communicating priorities and "futures". But some feedback on open issues would be great, e,g., "it's in the queue".
    3. Thanks for the 2.3 release -- just auto-updated to it.
    4. Doesn't fix the iSight camera hang on Snow Leopard, though :-(

Thanks for this useful forum and interactions. DL is a great tool.

Sure, I can give you a bunch of samples (see below). But no matter what I give you, there's bound to be a longer one :-) What I guess I'm asking for is:
    1. More room for the title in the generic display, up to some reasonable size.
    2. A way to see an arbitrarily long title by user action, i.e., clicking on the title.

One case where this causes a problem is where there are multiple versions of a book, differentiated by a subtitle or edition number.

    Thanks for looking into this,

    Mike

Long titles -- how to see?
Long titles -- how to see?

Am I missing something? I have lots of books with titles that start out the same (e.g., same title, different edition). In neither the Book Title view nor the Book Info(!) can I see more than a starting portion of the title -- the rest is elided with ellipses (...) I can understand this in the Title view, but in Book Info?

If there isn't a preference or setting for this somewhere, there should be.

    TIA,

Still get the spinning beachball when opening the scanner window for iSight.
    Snow Leopard 10.6.1, Today's latest DL 2.3 beta (v11612).
Looks like lots of people are seeing this problem, so it can't be anything too(!) unusual in their Mac configurations.

I get the same problem as John (case 165627) -- forever spinning beach ball if I try to open the iSight camera window, even in beta 3 (v11605). Will keep trying new betas as they are released.

I got the infamous "delicious library items.deliciouslibrary2 couldn't be opened" error message when starting DL v2.2 (v11510 -- latest version) this morning. From the other messages on this forum, it appears that my library was corrupted. Luckily, from a month old backup and working backward through the UPC log, I was able to rebuild my library.

Cause? Looks like it was related to some sequence of DL uses, upgrading Mac OS to Snow Leopard, and upgrading DL to the latest version.

Have other folks seen this problem in moving to Snow Leopard.
