A comment on the problem "Real URL in ow.ly social bar and hijacking browser windows" in HootSuite:
To answer your first question, we removed the full URL link from the bar in order to reduce the size of the bar and add more sharing options.
You can make the showing of the full URL an option because if you want to share the real URL, you have to close the bar first :)
Thanks for your response, I'm waiting for what your response to the whole situation would be... – Miladinoski, on July 30, 2009 11:11
Miladinoski asked a question in HootSuite on July 30, 2009 11:00:
New Hootlet doesn't appear, the old one appears insteadHow can I use the new Hootlet (new.hootsuite.com) instead of the old one (old.hootsuite.com) which appears when I click on it, nevermind the fact that I re-added the Hootlet from the new Hootsuite web site.
The address in the Hootlet is the same as the old one, but when I go and change the URL in the address bar after I click on the bookmarklet from http://old.hootsuite.com to http://new.hootsuite.com the bookmarklet appears with a better and slightly improved design (me likes it ^^)...
The code of the bookmarklet I add is this one:
javascript:var%20d=document,w=window,e=w.getSelection,f='http://hootsuite.com/twitter/bookmark-tool-v2?',l=d.location,e=encodeURIComponent,p='address='+e(l.href)+'&title='+escape(d.title),u=f+p;a=function(){if(!w.open(u,'t','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,location=0,resizable=0,status=0,width=555,height=570'))l.href=u;};if(/Firefox/.test(navigator.userAgent))setTimeout(a,0);else%20a();void(0);
ps. I use Opera.-

Miladinoski reported a problem in HootSuite on July 15, 2009 18:59:
Real URL in ow.ly social bar and hijacking browser windowsWhy did you even dare to remove the full url from the ow.ly bar thus making everyone either remove the bar to share the link with his friends via IM or giving the ow.ly link which will make non savvy users to not want to click the url because it's weird (yes, I heard that a lot of times!) or suspicious for some reason or another.
No, the extremely tiny arrow on the right of the close box doesn't serve us customers right. It uses a cookie and many people remove cookies on close so the bar stays there and causes frustration which leads to using another shortening service. You don't want that, right?
Some people like the sharing features of the ow.ly bar.
That canned response I got on Twitter doesn't help either because I bet it doesn't please most of the people but only a tinier fraction of them.
I tell you this because most (if not all) of the savvy users hate hijacking with frames (the Digg example for one). Just think what would happen if someone bookmarks the ow.ly link and tries to access it when Hootsuite is down for 1-2 hours, so the bookmarker will forget about the site and won't bother visting it and will search for alternatives (unless it's really important). That wouldn't please the owner, would it?
I'm sorry if I sound harsh but that's the reality the users have to face.
Consider doing something about this in the near future. This is traffic hijacking.-

A comment on the problem "I hate ow.ly" in HootSuite:
This isn't solving the problem, it's getting around it w/o doing what was demanded.
Not only that, you even dared to remove the full url from the ow.ly bar thus making everyone either remove the bar to share the link with his friends via IM or giving the ow.ly link which will make non savvy users to not want to click the url because it's weird (yes, I heard that a lot of times!) or suspicious.
I beg you, if you can't make the ow.ly bar removable for your followers for free in the future, at least add the full URL or add a little picture that shows it when clicked on it.
You really should consider something like that because ordinary savvy users hate hijacking with frames. Just see what happened with digg for Pete's sake! – Miladinoski, on July 15, 2009 18:36-

Miladinoski replied on July 07, 2009 11:41 to the update "Changes To Our International SMS" in Brightkite:
This makes me really sad...
First Twitter removes SMS for international users, now you remove the SMS service altogether. What's next, removing the IM notifications? :(
Please give us some updates on this matter its really important for us...
For those that like the SMS option, they can sign up for Ping.fm which offers free SMS updating for every service that exists out here, you can update all of them at once or one at a time with their shortcuts...-
