A comment on the problem "Free download from MacHeist now asking me for registration after update!" in The Cosmic Machine:
I agree that we have a fault for not clarifying the restrictions from the start, I've acknowledged it.
I would also like to say that we didn't intentionally release the update today - we were forced by the circumstances. The reason it happened was because an API change in Twitter rendered EventBox unusable for Twitter. We had to release an update as soon as possible.
It is worth mentioning that our intention is not to make / force anyone to pay. The MH edition will be free forever, you can continue using it for as long as you like (that includes the bug fix release). We have a full-refund no questions asked policy so anyone who is not satisfied with EventBox can just return it. We're not interested in forcing users to buy EB if it doesn't provide value to them.
Again, apologies for the situation. – Milen Dzhumerov, on April 02, 2009 22:47

We've already implemented that feature in the bleeding edge branch. See http://thecosmicmachine.com/tmp/ShowC... for a demo of how it works in EB.
A comment on the idea "Support for GitHub" in The Cosmic Machine:
There are two issues I'd like to address.
1) You can continue to use the free MacHeist Edition, we've provided a bug fix for it and it's still free as the original http://thecosmicmachine.com/downloads... (although with the same restrictions http://milen.tumblr.com/post/89528243...). This build won't expire so you can continue using that until we have GitHub support.
2) How likely is it to see GitHub in EB? Well, I can tell you GitHub is not coming to EB in the next 1 month. We've recently hired a developer who is going to work solely on new services, so it's not unlikely that GitHub will be supported sometime during the summer. But then again, we haven't fixed what services will be support and when, everything can change. So, don't rely on vague estimates because they might not be met.
The best advice I can give you is to buy EventBox when / if it's worth for you. If GitHub is the only reason to buy EventBox, don't buy it now. Buy it when we support it and you feel the implementation is good enough for your tastes.
I should also mention that we provide trial extensions to anyone who asks, so just drop us an email whenever you want to give EventBox another go.
I hope that clears up any questions you might have. – Milen Dzhumerov, on April 02, 2009 20:34

A comment on the problem "Free download from MacHeist now asking me for registration after update!" in The Cosmic Machine:
My initial response probably started off with the wrong paragraph and on a second reading I can see why it sounds a little bit too harsh. Believe me, I'm not trying to blame you or anyone else for not reading my blog. I just wanted to point out that we did what we could to communicate the restrictions.
From our side, we did:
- Post on our blog the restrictions of the MH when MH launched
- Post on Twitter about the same restrictions
- Include a warning when you update the MH build
- Provide a bug fix for the MH version within 40 minutes of being notified of the bug
What we should have done is made it clear on the MH front page what the restrictions were. Unforunately, we do not have access to these pages but I do acknowledge that we should have pushed MH for the restrictions to be made explicit on their pages from start. – Milen Dzhumerov, on April 02, 2009 17:50
A comment on the problem "Free download from MacHeist now asking me for registration after update!" in The Cosmic Machine:
Let me try and clarify a one point that might not be apparent. We did not give MH permission to sell our application, we gave them permission to give the MH edition away under the terms that no updates will be available and no official support (we've even answered quite a few support requests coming from MH users).
I acknowledge that we have a fault in not making it completely clear and obvious what those restrictions were when you started the application. We could have handled this better.
We've alerted MacHeist to update the binary on their website and to also make it clear what the restrictions are.
Regarding customer support, I might suggest asking some of our longer term users. Personally, I've tried to answer every single thread on these forums. Almost all emails and support requests get answered within 1 day (7 days a week) and we're very responsive on Twitter (you can see for yourself). We've had about 10-15 releases since we went public and all of them are driven by customer requests. We do listen to what people are saying. – Milen Dzhumerov, on April 02, 2009 16:27

I mostly agree with point #1, it could have been communicated better on the MacHeist website. We did make it clear on all communication channels we have access this which might not be enough for everyone, as you pointed out.
Regarding #2, we were very clear during the talks with MH that we cannot afford to offer the regular EventBox edition for free. MH came back to us saying that they would then instead want to do a single build deal. We agreed. The deal was never about free updates or support.
Regarding #3, we're not forcing anyone to use EventBox. If you don't like it, don't use it.
As you know, the version you got from EventBox was completely free, it's just the updates and support you don't get. We're also providing critical updates to MH edition. At the end of the day, developing software and supporting customers have associated costs.
I do not feel my reply was pretentious or rude, I was just clarifying the situation. If you were offended in any way, accept my apologies.
A comment on the idea "Necessary features. Please do these." in The Cosmic Machine:
The Quick Send window doesn't take you to the main window - it opens the small window to just send a message (although it does activate the app so if the main window is already open, it will go in front of other apps).
Pressing the hotkeys again do hide the QS, main and HUD windows. – Milen Dzhumerov, on April 02, 2009 14:32

When the MacHeist edition was released, we made it clear from Day 1 what the restrictions were (see below for links). Those were the terms and conditions agreed with the MacHeist people.
Twitter changed one of their API responses and it broke EventBox. So we issued a critical update to EventBox. Because the MH edition does not include any updates, the update feed still links to the regular version so in the future you get a notification when new features arrive. Moreover, the MH version tells you that updating will start your trial.
We've also issued a bug fix release to the free MH version but MH still haven't updated their servers.
All of this is explained in two blog posts - regarding the restrictions http://milen.tumblr.com/post/89528243... and regarding the critical bug fix release http://milen.tumblr.com/post/92206471...
We're currently hosting the fixed MH version in the meantime.

You're probably not aware of how the buffering mechanism works. You can imagine that each tweet has a virtual text buffer. When you select that tweet, it means that you want to reply to it so the input box shows the virtual text buffer for it. When you select another tweet, the text box switches to the respective buffer. Once you get to know how it works, you would appreciate its usefulness.
Milen Dzhumerov replied on April 02, 2009 12:59 to the question "How do you use folders in Eventbox?" in The Cosmic Machine:
As FredZ explained, you can create folders inside Twitter (all plugins will follow to support this) or outside the context of a service. When it's outside the context of a service, you use folders as organizers of Smart Folders (which actually provide the content). For Twitter, you can drag & drop searches, profile peeks, folders and smart folders.
A comment on the problem "twitter down" in The Cosmic Machine:
Do you have searches or profile peeks? If they don't update, then you're experiencing some different issues. The only issue the latest release fixed was regarding replies. You should still be getting updates to the regular timeline regardless of the latest fix. – Milen Dzhumerov, on April 02, 2009 11:42
