Now that we know what this is caused by (99.9%), we're hunting for a URL which will crash EventBox.

I would advise you to turn on URL expansion. In case EventBox crashes, run the following command in Terminal (spotlight the app if you haven't used it):
defaults write com.thecosmicmachine.EventBox AutoExpandLinksForNewEvents -bool NO

This will disable URL expansion for any *new events* which arrive after you relaunch EventBox. It's exactly those *new events* which will contain a URL that results in the URL Expander to crash.

If someone finds such a URL, please email it to us and if it indeed does crash EventBox, we will be giving out bounties (EventBox licenses). Thank you all for your help.

Okay guys & gals, I think we have found the issue. We cannot verify now whether this really is the cause or not but we will now be waiting for EB to crash for someone and then try to reproduce it. Thank you all for your help.

Now that's very very interesting. Basically, turning off that option fixed the crashes for you? More over, it even seems to be the case that a twitter event contained a link which crashes the URL expander. Interesting. – Milen Dzhumerov, on March 18, 2009 21:12

Regarding the trigger key and further keystrokes - we use the standard controls from Apple, so that's part of their limitations (the completion is not our own).

Regarding partial names, it should work. If there are many users which start with an e, you can type in @e and press Escape and it will show a completion for all those names. – Milen Dzhumerov, on March 17, 2009 20:26

I completely agree that this is very frustrating and painful but we're unable to do anything about the bug as long as we cannot reproduce it on our side. Once we reproduce it, the bug is as good as fixed. So if find a way to do that, please let us know immediately. – Milen Dzhumerov, on March 16, 2009 23:16

The reasons it didn't make it in the current update are two:
1) I underestimated the time and effort needed for this feature.
2) After looking into it, major architectural changes were needed that I was not comfortable performing so close to the next public release.

We don't have an ISA proxy server at hand but we've heard similar reports about other proxies. If we could find a proxy which we have access to and crashes EB, we will fix the bug immediately. We have plans to rewrite some of the networking code using a lower just to check if this bug gets fixed by this because we have no idea what is causing it. – Milen Dzhumerov, on March 15, 2009 23:43
