So far the move has been very overwhelming, socialengine is an ocean of options and customizations.
I have to do everything manually and I am going to lose so much content it makes me want to cry.
its is absolutely worth it though, my heart sinks every time i think of the possibilities, not to mention the big smile that i get on my face when i think of the future.
I cant even explain how much control you have, I can create member levels, then assign EXACTLY what they can and can not do.
I can say for example, gold users can write blogs, free users cant.... etc
Ning is great at what they offer, simply the best.
however, if you want to have power over everything on your network... you have no choice but to go somewhere else.
I have bought many plugins to make my admin area easier to use... for example, the drag and drop plug in for the homepage (and every other page on my site)
so now I dont need to know HTML or CSS to move things around, remove them.. etc
I also bought "tab manager" to control the tabs with out HTML or CSS knowledge.
there are 100s, maybe 1000s? of plugins, so.. ha! its an ocean.
you also have your own terms of services, your own everything.
there is a generic faq page, you can remove and add to it.
you can buy 100s of templates for your site or your users to use, it comes with 4 ugly templates.
I also bought a plugin to replicate the look and feel of my old ning groups and pages.
i have spent so far around $900 (plus $30 a month) , you have to buy everything separate, forum was 100 dollars for example.
in comparison i spent $900+ in 2 years on my ning network. (i didnt have to pay ning anything in advance)
I am so overwhelmed, I will report back once its all done!
this move fking sucks, no ifs or buts about it.

Robert, I would join but it just doesn't concern nor effect me anymore.
I do wish you all the best.
ning should be for fun, building a business around it is.. well, not a good thing. – Mack, on October 27, 2009 18:53

hey, you dont have to tell me twice, I have requested my content and waiting on ning to send it.
I just finished giving ning a praise and I completely agree with you that people need to stop wining and move.
but, this is her thread and i think you are completely missing the point about the gift app.
most people are angry because of the opt-out.... ahhh fowgetabaat it, i am tired of talking about this and it doesn't concern me anymore.
that said, big kudos for ning for giving us our content.
ning is GREAT, its just not for everyone.
my praise http://getsatisfaction.com/ning/topic...

A praise when its due, is a praise that is due.Its time to give praise, i have complained a lot in the past.
Ning is a fantastic platform, the best at what it does out there.
sadly, ning isn't for everyone and they recognize this.
Ning is giving us all of our content, I haven't received it yet but was promised.
Ning, from the bottom of my heart.. thank you.

Zohra, well said.
My only advice is NOT to join socialgo as you will be under their mercy.
If you move, move to a solution like Joomsocial and socialengine where you are indeed the owner of the network.
Ning and socialgo both share YOUR members with all their networks.
Good luck!
We really need to set up a site were we all can meet and talk about migrating out of ning (this place sucks)
A comment on the question "Why is NING acting like a 'parent' to us?" in Ning:
Sure thing Rob,
So far, it is very hard to customize the look and feel of the site vs. nings drag and drop. (If a developer creates an app to address this.. ning is in trouble)
The control that you have over your network is INSANE, you are truly the master of your domain and not a silly group owner. – Mack, on October 25, 2009 17:31

Zohra, indeed.. its going to take me a month at least to get comfortable.
however, I disagree that they are ugly, there is nothing uglier than a ning network just for the simple fact that they all look pretty much the same. unless you are a CSS master your home page will look like mine.
Here is an example of a socailengine site, not sure what you say they are ugly.
http://www.zanibook.com/
also, they have 100s of templates that you can get pay or get for free
Mack replied on October 25, 2009 17:20 to the question "The virtual gifts are ridiculous!" in Ning:
Ning apps being "quite a disappointment" is a HUGE understatement.
Ning apps are garbage, plain and simple.
and thats why I am leaving ning, not because of the last fiasco.
I would link their competitors add ons but I dont want to seem like I am advertising for them, let me just say they are INCREDIBLE!

Oh, I see what you mean.
Another reason why only 2% are payed NCs is the fact that the "freedom" difference between premium and none premium networks is not that big (if any)
Honestly, Ning is basically one step higher than facebook groups.
we all know it.
I cant imagine how ning will look like 2 years from now. – Mack, on October 24, 2009 20:32
