The proper way to do it is simply using this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NotificationD... (which is really easy is both C/C++ or python). It's just about the same thing as using notify-send from the terminal. An add-ons developer could do this really REALLY easily IMO.

Any chance to get appending file(s) to the current playlist added to the functionality list?
This way I could right click, append to playlist a file in nautilus, through nautilus-actions. This would help me a lot!! :)
In addition, perhaps a command for playing the file(s) right away (by adding to a new playlist?).

yeah.... I actually meant notify-osd, I guess, so it would look like the new gnome notifications that's willing to become more of a standard (all programs to use the same type notification, so it would be more consistent).
The "Notify me" add-on does the job.

we'd rather you linked to the songbird's add-ons site so people wouldn't suspect spyware.. – moreglobe3, on May 11, 2009 18:27

Ok! I found out how! Thanx, McFlow!
Here's how it worked for me:
1. Download "Notify Me" add-on from here: http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/...
2. Extract the downloaded .xpi file to some folder
3. Oped install.rdf with gedit or some other text editor
4. Look for tag <em:maxversion> and modify its body to 1.1.2 (your Songbird version
5. Save install.rdf
6. Pack back everything in a zip file and rename it with the .xpi extension, like it was before
7. In Songbird. Tools -> Options -> Add-ons -> Install... and point to the created .xpi file
That's it!
The developer of the the add-on probably didn't have time to increment the version of the add-on when the new Songbird came out.</em:maxversion>

moreglobe3 replied on April 26, 2009 17:20 to the question "File browser" in Songbird:
Just to back up the comments in the post. Totally agree that the "directory broser" plug-in is not what we would expect. We would like something closer to a "direct OS file browsing feature". Have it look like the explorer, in Windows; like nautilus in Gnome; like konqueror in Kde ... and .. #whatever# on Macs (don't know what it's called on Mac).
Along the time, I gathered a list of features a proper browser should have:
- [must] choice between list and icon view of the files
- [must] ability to browse and select using both mouse and keyboard (alt+left, alt+right, alt+up should function as they should - back, forward, up one folder)
- [must] proper functionality of the shift and ctrl keys for selecting files
- [must] double-clicking the file / pressing enter appends the selected files / folders to the current playlist (except when there is only one folder selected, open the respective folder)
- [must] ability to drag files to playlist
- [must] right click / application button shows a menu that includes the option of appending the files to the current playlist as a separate choice, while also offering the option to append to some other playlist
- [must] do not append selected tracks in alphabetical order of the track name if they all have the same track number! Use alphabetical order of the file names instead. (this is an annoying one in exaile).
- [must] ability to edit file's metadata from the browser (probably the best would be a right click menu option)
- [must] shouldn't be able to add any other type of file to the playlist (only music; no images, no text files etc.)
- [could] show only music files, ignore any other file types
- [could] have control of the files and folders like you would have in the standard file explorer of the OS (like move, copy, delete, rename etc.)
Anyone got some more to add to this list?
