hi guys,
I posted an update here:

the changes should be effective for everyone in the next few days. If, in a few days, you're still not able to browse back, let us know.

I can echo psd's sentiment as for how serious I consider this to be. Prior to this crisis, Twitter had no stronger advocate and agent in my local area than myself. I have sold it to friends and people I work with on every possible occasion. After this, I'm more sceptical that you really know what you are doing. For instance, if you don't understand the business value of mining the back catalogue of tweets (for market analysis, for instance) then I don't know how you're going to make money. And if you don't understand how to make money, then you're going out of business. And so is my data. Hence I don't know if I can reliably trust in you. – Morten Blaabjerg, on September 05, 2008 08:29

Thanks for posting this link - guess this is the closest we get to an answer. I'll probably begin to invest my own time in Identi.ca and open microblogging rather than sit around waiting for this – Morten Blaabjerg, on July 26, 2008 12:55

A comment on the question "Why no access to tweets older than 2 months?" in Twitter:
Yes it do seems to be an issue with a hardcoded 10 pages archive limit, for everyone.
What's worse, it seems what used to be Summize but now http://search.twitter.com doesn't go longer back either. This is bad, as there seems to be no way to access the permalinks by any method.
Found lost favourites to re-appear if I added enough favourites to get up to a number of favourites dividable by 20, then the "previous" link would reappear and allow me to see starred tweets from longer back.
Have not tested if this would work on the 10 page archives limit, but doubt it's the same issue. – Morten Blaabjerg, on July 21, 2008 22:41

How much space does 140 chr messages take up in this age of the Petabyte? Not much, and I doubt this is policy.
My bet is they use it as one of their ways to manage load on their system, albeit not a very good method and not a very userfriendly method. Devaluating your product is not the best way to go about fixing problems.
One things is problems, the radio silence on these issues is much more offensive and creatés nothing but distrust and a poisonous atmosphere around here. It's really bad karma, and a company such as Twitter should be able to put someone to work answering these queries.

exador, I am very grateful for your post here, and for the record consider it very helpful to know there is a free service, which is created under different terms, and will indeed consider to move, if Twitter can't work it out/answer users here, and Identi.ca offers a more reliable service – Morten Blaabjerg, on July 21, 2008 22:12

Some old tweets work for me, if I know the direct permalink.
Other old tweets, including starred tweets in my "favourites" appear to have vanished and are completely inaccessible.
I don't care if Twitter has problems, but the radio silence on the problems is what pisses me off the most. I _don't know_ if my old stuff is still there or not. If it's still there, fine, great, we can work from there, I can make backups. If the messed up and stuff have simply vanished, I'll have little faith in using Twitter no matter how much I like it, and will surely begin using another social messaging service.
