Hi there,
Thanks for the question!
In brief:
This is not a replacement for OpenID in any way. We're just a mapping service - you put in an email, we output an OpenID. If the RP is set up properly, you'll be able to enter in an email address or an OpenID into one field.
An RP that implements this can now ask for email addresses OR OpenIDs but use OpenID on the backend for everything.

Hi there,
That's a pretty unhelpful error message! I'll clear that up. Here's what's actually going on:
When the YADIS discovery is performed on those domains, it finds <meta />
and attempts to read your XRDS document from there - unfortunately, that page is a 404. So it's THAT url which is invalid, not the actual domains you're trying to delegate to or from. If you remove that META tag, or point it at an XRDS document, it should work fine.
Thanks for reporting this!
Michael Richardson replied on June 22, 2008 21:35 to the problem "Why do I get an error after disassociating an OpenID?" in Vidoop:
Hi Jared, thanks for the bug report!
The OpenID that we returned you to after you unassociated your account was malformed, resulting in a 404 for the xrds document (which, of course, made the OpenID invalid). I fixed this both on your account and the problem which caused this in the first place.
Thanks again for the report!
A comment on the question "Why should I add multiple email addresses to your account?" in Vidoop:
That's an advantage that the MyOpenID provider (and most others) has. However, the emailtoid provider is very stupid - it doesn't give back any information to the site at all. Now, you can associate your MyOpenID OpenID with your account, in which case all we do is forward the requests on immediately to them, so MyOpenID will handle everything for you, including having you choose which identity to use, etc. – Michael Richardson, on June 21, 2008 16:58

I'm sorry, but I'm not 100% sure about what you're asking. If you have a work email and a personal email and they both map to the same OpenID in our system, we'll just automatically merge the accounts. – Michael Richardson, on June 21, 2008 16:31

You can create an account with OpenID - the initial field at http://emailtoid.net/account/start/ accepts either an email address or an OpenID. It's a consumer of itself. – Michael Richardson, on June 21, 2008 16:26
Michael Richardson replied on June 21, 2008 08:25 to the question "So What?" in Vidoop:
At the moment there are no RPs using this service except for emailtoid itself (it's a consumer of itself!) and http://erp.gobyairship.com - though we hope to announce some more RPs soon, and, as always, we're extremely happy to work with anybody who wishes to support this service.
However, it should be noted, again, that we are a FALLBACK service. We hope to go away eventually! We hope that every top level email provider (gmail.com, yahoo.com, etc.) will support their own email-to-url mapping service - until that time, however, we're there so people can start asking for email addresses rather than OpenIDs (but still just use OpenID in the process).
Michael Richardson replied on June 21, 2008 08:07 to the question "So What?" in Vidoop:
So you're thinking from the perspective of a consumer - think for a moment from an RP (relying party) site.
Instead of asking for an OpenID, which is confusing to most users (enter in a URL? WTF?) the RP can ask for an email address. The user ends up using an OpenID, knowingly or not, and the RP only has to support OpenID.
OpenID is like SMTP, we feel - we didn't get SMTP, we got email. We're trying to promote OpenID adoption and use while solving some of the problems with OpenID (namely, adoption problems).
Michael Richardson replied on June 20, 2008 18:06 to the question "Why should I associate an OpenID with my account?" in Vidoop:
emailtoid does give you a simple OpenID, but you can't personalize it and it is somewhat annoying to log in, since you have to authenticate every time. It's an extremely simple, no frills, no features OpenID provider. In order to get more features and stronger security, you should sign up with a real OpenID provider.
