You could try closing every application and then go to:
Terminal and type " top " without ""
and look for any apps that should not be running but are still using memory (I've had problems with virex before, I no longer use it).
To exit " top " you can type "q" and if you want to kill a process you can type
" kill x" where x is the PID (process ID from the top list)

You can also go to "system preferences > Accounts > Login Items"
look for apps that may stay running the entire time. You can also stop them if you want.
hope that helps a little...

Sorry I meant 10.5.4 Leopard. I'm not sure how I will be able to tell which application that is not behaving using the activity monitor. I looked at the applications list that were running but I didn't see an application that seemed to be out of whack.
Yes, the power saving is on. I'm still using the defaults. Maybe I should start programs one by one and see if any of the ones I use regularly (firefox, entourage, adium) cause that. If one of those are not the culprit, I'm not sure how to proceed though. I'll write back here.
Thanks for the attempt, though.

You might check the Activity Monitor to see if you can find any rogue apps sucking the life out of your computer. It can be found under Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor. You can kill processes directly from there, but try not to kill any system processes. BEFORE YOU DO THIS, just check to make sure that you have your computer set to go to sleep by going to System Preferences (This can be found by clicking on the Apple in the top left corner of the screen) and going to energy saver. If it is not already display, click Show Details. You should see two sliders. The top one is when the computer goes to sleep and the bottom is when your screen goes to sleep. Note that the settings can be optimized for battery vs. power charger via the dropdown box on top of the window. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Where is my honey bunches of oats?I noticed the amount of actual honey bunches of oats in the "Honey Bunches of Oats" cereal decreased over time. Then, I saw a commercial that shocked me. It turns out that the company is releasing a new product: Honey bunches that is made of exclusively honey bunches. I think that is atrocious.-

I used to have this problem but mine was a more subtle flicker that became obvious when the brightness was down a bit. I believe ALL macbooks have this same problem, people just keep the brightness all the way up so they don't notice it. Anyways, I think upgrading to Leopard solved it. Apple should replace the software drivers in the earlier versions of OSX. But they won't admit there is a problem so it is unlikely they will address it.-
