    Nathan S.
I haven't experienced this problem lately --- and I've been doing quite a bit of work on one particular mockup, even with time passing the saving has been good. Although I've also been in the habit of using Save and Continue a lot more often now.

Nathan S. shared an idea in Balsamiq on November 11, 2009 23:15:

    Nathan S.
    Export to Outline / Text
Working on a project today, the idea came up to be able to export an outline of all content related info into a format where text elements could be edited --- for example we've just produced a Mockup for a homepage with lorem ipsum and fake titles etc. Now we're transitioning to producing a more realistic draft of how the site will look --- I want the client to provide sample content for all areas in roughly the same format/length etc.

It would be able to send them a doc with an outline of the various elements and the content needed for each section.

Because we've got those areas defined already in the mockup it would be convenient to then export all text related content with sub-headings for the element they are coming from --- in order for the client to provide that sample text for the next phase.

Another good example of something similar is MindMeister's Export Outline feature that takes the visual map and puts each branch in a word document as a heading and each off shoot indented below that. This produces a very simple outline based on the MindMap content --- I know the Mockup is a bit more complicated but I think the XML contains enough information about each element and it's content to probably produce a nice outline for this.

Of course if that's not too ambitious --- importing that same content back into the mockup would be then brilliant, but that's just a dream :) And I'm sure the dreaming could continue further from there.

Ideally though , I'm just thinking about a simple --- export all text content --- feature down and dirty, anything beyond that would be bonus.

Would anyone else find this beneficial? I know some people have discussed that creating mockups with lorem ipsum is not a good idea in general... using fake content and not real content is not good either.. etc... I'm in agreement to some extent...
  • question

Nathan S. replied on November 11, 2009 20:30 to the question "Can't PNG out from myBalsamiq" in Balsamiq:

    Nathan S.
I had the same experience as Riel -- it works if you think of it, I did it out of desperation the one day but I was also finding that the size of the output is not consistent... it's sometimes cropped very closely to the edges of the actual mockup... it would be great to have an automatic margin set on the outside edges. I find that usually I'm looking for an export to import into my Feedback tool or send via email and without the proper breathing room around the mockup .... it feels cramped and affects the recipients view of my mockup.

Now my workflow involves downloading the file, then opening in photoshop extending the canvas and then resaving to send.

Another value would be to have a way to "send as attachment" even to myself so I can forward it on etc.

I know the idea is for collaboration and sharing online, which is amazing but there are many times when we're sending to a client or colleague without adding them directly to mybalsamiq.

So having an Export to PNG feature (with some default outside margins or choose of margin/screen resolution would be great --- I have another app that pops up a dialog asking you the margins on export and you have a default number or you can key in unique ones per export -- i.e. 0 top 10 left 10 right 20 bottom ... or whatever)... and also a Send as Attachment feature would be brilliant with the same margin options for the export, just a send to "self" feature would be fine.... some may prefer to have an option to send to others directly and copy self.

I think the Download Mockup should have click or mouseover options --- giving you PNG/XML etc. options. If anyone uses freshbooks, they do this on the Print Invoice buttons or MindMeister has some great Export features using a Modal / Lightbox style window. Definitely worth checking out.

I can screencast them if anyone is interested to see them

Lost some work! Auto Save Please?
I had been working on a mockup for quite a while, got looking at the Getsatisfaction boards --- and then went back to my mockup. Decided to save it, clicked "save and close" --- ended up at the login screen --- I guess my session had timed out? I lost what I was working on. This is prompting me to think the online version will need some sort of Autosave or Draft feature ... Wordpress does this using a Revision history-- I think something would be needed to protect your mockups from bad timing autosaves ... but not sure if you have support for version history or not.

Either way, that was a very sad experience --- to complete that much work and unexpectedly be logged out. Maybe a warning via popup asking if I want to keep my session open? I've seen some sites do that where they at least warn you if you don't respond within a certain amount of time your session will expire. I'm sure I could Mockup a dialog to explain :) But I've got to start working on the one I lost... haha.

A comment on the question "Insert a mockup by reference instead of copy..." in Balsamiq:

    Nathan S.
I like this idea --- and I'm in agreement with Sara --- any of the ideas here aside from the export as png would be really great for me. This last one would work really well with my own personal workflow as I was already looking for a feature like this figuring it existed somewhere. I was thinking I could import the bmml files from mockupstogo.net in the same way --- I need to learn more about how these work but I love this idea of my components ... I think I like Mockup Includes too. Reminds me of Homesite's "my snippets" code pieces you can reuse and Wordpress's new "Widgets" features that allow you to drag an existing widget to a secondary area to save the settings and reuse it. These type of design features are much more common in Print design programs like Indesign where you "place" files and just like Michael's concept if there's been a change to that linked/placed file you are alerted to update it. I could see both options being viable, having a folder of "includes" for a specific project. And the "My Components" feature would definitely need some sort of folders or sub sections, because some of them you might want to build to reuse globally on all mockups and some might be just for a particular project to be reused. – Nathan S., on September 15, 2009 04:38

    Nathan S.
Thanks for sharing that info Starbuck --- I definitely think it's worth considering and in the context that 37 signals presents -- I would agree. Ideally you don't want to be using fake content when developing screens for a webapp the same way you might for a website, maybe even not too far past initial drafts for a website too... I will have to think about this more but I do think it's important to consider. And 37 signals reputation for ui puts even more weight behind that for me.

I also like the post Peldi referenced about using "greeked" text --- this might prevent some of the confusion the end user feels but again maybe not. I would definitely love to have greeked text as an option in Mockups. Where possible I would definitely prefer to use actual or close to actual content --- but as someone else mentions it's often hard to get content from clients ... if you're hiring a copywriter that's a different story... I've done it the other way in the past with lorem ipsum and it is frustrating when the final text ends up much different than the original fake content especially at the end of a project when you just want to complete it not start over.

I have this problem as well, not 24 but various numbers under different clients. Of course I'm not sure why I am bothering to post this, since gfiremark didn't get any response from the Blinksale team yet anyway. There are at least a few people with this problem --- Where is the Blinksale team?

    GIANT logo on invoice
I have been opening up my PDF invoices for clients regularly now due to all the issues with Blinksale --- concerned that mysterious things were happening with the totals, item lines, taxes, etc --- and discovered a new issue that's never been a problem before. I now have a GIANT logo that overlaps the phone contact and looks very unprofessional ....

Here's a screenshot of my new GIANT logo in my invoices --- I have zoomed way out to show just how giant this is.

    http://www.screencast.com/users/arkit...

I've been with blinksale for quite a while, this is a new issue --- the logo has not been updated recently.

    Anyone else with this problem?

Blinksale team --- can we get a quick fix for this please!

I agree 100% with Relativesanity --- I've been looking at all the alternative products and will be choosing one asap as well. This is ridiculous! I could write a lot more but my thoughts right now... where is Firewheel Design during all this trouble, shouldn't they have a responsibility to us as customers who they sold to Doublewide (I mean they were buying Blinksale at whatever price they were not just for the software but the user base too right?)---- at least to make sure the transition goes smoothly? My view of them has dropped considerably during this process as well.

How did things go with this? I'm not having this same problem where a number of blank past due invoices have been created under one specific client (maybe others as well).

I don't see that this problem has been solved --- Brian could you please provide an update on the status of this and what others who find this problem should do to resolve it? Do we contact you?

    Thanks

Kyle was this problem resolved for you back when you reported this problem? I'm not assuming I need to look back to about 1 month ago (was that May 18th or June 18th) to check on my recurring invoices that may not have gone out as well. I'm wondering if it was just monthly recurring or also yearly (or other variable) recurring invoices that did not go out. There's another thread tracking this recent issue that some of us only noticed today because of the first of the month --- You can find more info here: http://getsatisfaction.com/blinksale/...

Same problem here, just realizing it and I believe it's not too easy to quickly see what invoices should have went out since it appears the "to be processed in the next 7 days" feature doesn't recognize that these have not gone out.

BIG PROBLEM here, worried, frustrated and not impressed like all the others on this post... you will have a lot more once they realize their invoices have not gone out.

    Questions:
Will these go out once problem is fixed? Or do I need to send?
If I send now, will the system send another when it's fixed?
Will you add a feature to see "pending" invoices in any date range I select including historic data, so I can confirm which should have went out on certain dates.

I can check the monthly recurring templates but then I have to go into EVERY recurring template to be sure that none of the monthly or yearly ones were not sent. A lot of work for an app that claims to make invoicing easy.

Please helpmake fixing this issue easy for all of us. And I'm thinking we should at least be getting free service while we are beta testing this new software platform --- if not more than just free service.

    Duplicate Invoices
An invoice was re-sent today that was sent manually yesterday -- the date on the invoice was yesterday's date as well. We're not sure why the invoice was sent again today. Of course this is another touchy problem, as it appears to the client we're "impatient" about the invoice.
