A comment on the problem "No SMS confirmation on O2 UK" in I want Sandy:
Dunno about receiving but I was a bit miffed to find the 10p per text charge whacked onto my bill last 2 months - weird cos I am sure I was using previously and not getting charged :-(
Like you say UK gets bum deal :-( – DMee, on November 20, 2008 16:19

I just tried to sign up with twitsms.co.uk and it kept saying my username/password was invalid. Tried several times. Logged into Twitter.com as a sanity check and username/password is fine. No idea what's up with that.
EDIT: scrap that. I signed up okay. I was entering my Twitter username/password on the front page instead of using the signup link. At least I got my daily blonde moment out the way.

It's a bit of a workaround, but I've signed up to twitsms.co.uk for a pretty small per message charge, I've fixed both the Twitter and Sandy SMS problems in one hit. Certainly easier than Google Calender sync. – Commutr, on November 19, 2008 23:56

Bringing this thread back to life, can anyone confirm if the m-mail service charges to receive sms from the likes of Sandy? If so, what a load of rubbish! and now that Twitter doesnt do SMS in the UK anymore, going to have to rely on syncing with Google Calendar, which has no problems sending me text messages.

I was looking around for the email to text option. o2 don't have the most organized of sites. I found it by logging into their webmail. Looks like they charge for each sms sent! Makes it unusable to be notified of emails.
@conrad. It's possible to receive MMS messages. o2 of a webpage which you visit on the iPhone. You have to activate the service which doesnt take long. I think I read somewhere that o2 are working on an email to mms service - not sure on that.

I have an iPhone so MMS isn't possible, I tried going with the alternative... went to www.o2.co.uk to switch on email-to-text as suggested. I couldn't find anywhere to switch that on. So I just rang O2's iPhone Customer Service... the woman there had never heard of "email-to-text." She spent 5 minutes asking her advisors -- with me on hold -- and came back to tell me that it couldn't be done. "We don't offer that service." *sigh*
I've also tried the +44 and O2 UK thing. Still nothing.

@ Thomas Nichols, no you don't need to be signed up to O2 Broadband - you just need to have an O2 mobile and, I think, sign up to My O2 (this might not be strictly necessary but it doesn't hurt). As per Marshall's post right at the top, you then sms 'ON' to 212, and you should get a confirmation message from O2 that Mmail's been switched on. Once received, check that your mobile number is entered correctly into your settings at iwantsandy (+44, miss out the initial 0 then key in the rest of your number with no spaces), and request the confirmation message from Sandy again. When I followed these steps, I got the code from Sandy quite quickly and it all works perfectly now. Twitter does work too, but I actually use both - it's nice to have the option! ;-)

I have been using Twitter OK in UK then found this thread and activated o2 mmail OK - you have to enter your mobile number as international number i.e.
07712341234 becomes +447712341234
and choose o2 in drop down (not "other")
Now not sure which is best as Sandy version comes as 2 SMS because email header takes up so many characters and you have to reply to first SMS to get second half! Twitter just sends reminder text.
After all that worying I may just stick with twitter!!

This was 6 months ago and despite following all of the suggestions here, I can not get Sandy working with O2 UK via text message. – Dave Verwer, on May 27, 2008 13:20

Hi again,
I've just posted a full update at http://gsfn.us/t/bzp .
I apologize that you seem to have arrived at rush hour and assure you that this isn't the norm (witness the 3 month old posting on this self-same topic thread).
We're working hard on it!

Hello,
We have indeed been experiencing some incoming mail delays this morning: that's your mail getting to Sandy's inbox. Sandy is responding in a timely manner to what she's receiving, but our spam firewall — we run all incoming email through a rather robust spam trap — is responding rather sluggishly.
We're working on it right now and will report back shortly.
I apologize for the lack of responsiveness and any inconvenience this might be causing you.

i too am having troubles with the activation email. i have the first confirmation but never receive an activate email after sending the special address a reminder. (P.S.>>i asked for it to be sent in 1 minute and it has been an hour.) Not complaining or anything...i really just want to use this because it seems very well thought out and useful.
