I too am saddened by the decision to remove the choice about how to view @replies. I was a user who chose to see all @replies, even of those who I didn't follow for two main reasons:

1. Seeing replies to people I didn't follow allowed me to find new and interesting people.
2. There are lots of interesting people that I don't want to follow, but I do want to know when they say something particularly interesting. For me, seeing that someone had replied to something that one of those people had said would allow me to go and join in with that particular conversation. This was a good thing.

Allowing choice is good. Constraining people is not.
