What you experienced was real.
GoDaddy is very mercenary. When a credit card payment for an auto-renewal failed, rather than notify us and give us time to fix things, they immediately put up their landing page.
I'm still not sure why the payment failed, since I used another card on the same account to successfully complete the payment later.
Things are fixed now, and I've already started looking for a replacement registrar. Unfortunately, since GoDaddy replaced our name servers for a time, it may take a few hours for the correction to propagate.

Hi James,
You bring up some great points, and we at Loopt share your concern. Luckily, we actually already do as you suggest in addition to taking other safety measures. Our goal is to ensure Loopt is a safe service for all our users, even the unfortunate unwitting ones. Loopt has always and will continue to go to great lengths to ensure our service is safe and difficult to abuse.
From the very beginning we've looked out for our user's privacy and safety. We've taken many measures to ensure users know they are using the service and sharing their location.
Some examples from our Privacy and Security page:
- Device Verification: In order to sign up for the Loopt service, access to the device being tracked is required. This can take the form of a user visible verification SMS or in some cases a background SMS that the application processes. In any case, it is not possible to register a device without verifying the phone number via SMS and actually holding the phone. This means that a malicious user needs access to the phone they wish to track.
- SMS Reminder Messages: As you suggested, we send not just one, but multiple reminder messages at random intervals to devices capable of background tracking. They let the user know they have Loopt installed and are sharing their location, as well as providing information on how to disable and remove the service if they don't want it. On devices without background tracking (like the iPhone), the user has to open Loopt manually every time they wish to update their location.
- Account Owner Notice: On many carriers, we also send notification by postal mail that the user has signed up for the Loopt service. Letters are sent to the account holder's billing address as registered with the carrier.
- Additional Measures: We take further measures that we prefer to keep quiet. We don't disclose these so that they're harder to circumvent and to maximize their effectiveness.
In short, we do everything we can to keep our users safe, even in unwitting use scenarios. If you can think of anything else we should be doing, please let us know. We'd love to hear from you.
You can reach me personally at [my first name]@loopt.com.

Hi Everyone,
The problem actually has nothing to do with the iPhone update. It's just an unfortunate coincidence. We're currently having a problem with our image storage that's affecting all Loopt clients.
We're working on it and hope to have things working again momentarily. No pictures from the last day or so were successfully saved, but no older pictures were lost.
Sorry about that. We've been working on overhauling our image storage because we anticipated something like this happening, just not so soon.

Loopt asks for and verifies your phone number so that when your friends choose to share their locations with you, they can be confident that you're who you claim to be. Without verification it would be trivial for someone to impersonate you on the Loopt service. You can learn more about our privacy features here.
We'll look into the issue, but currently have no reason to believe that our systems have been compromised. It's most likely an unfortunate coincidence.
If you're still concerned, you may delete your Loopt account here. Deleting your account purges all of your data from our systems. We do not retain it.
I have no way to judge the intent of mobilephotoviewer.com. It could be a legitimate service with a disasterously awful means of verifying your phone number. Regardless, I'd strongly discourage giving your password to anyone other than AT&T.

Hi Ben,
As stated on the help section of our website, "You can STOP all messages coming from Loopt users by replying to any such SMS message with STOP, END, CANCEL, UNSUBSCRIBE, or QUIT."
I hope this helps resolve your problem.
