nickname replied on July 09, 2008 00:02 to the question "data backup" in Wuala:
run as many wuala clients/nodes as possible and take part in the wuala network. every now and then (or daily, or the frequency you think to be appropriate) download all your files/folders yourself in your own wuala client as well.
ctrl+a, ctrl+d (shotcut hotkeys).
wuala tends to give way and release storage space so your files eventually go "away" and are only stored in the wuala network as chunks/parts. if you wana really be sure you should download (re-load, refetch) all the chunks and parts to your local wuala clients and thus being sure that your clients store a complete copy as well of your own files.
i dont know if wuala will ever implement an automatic feature like this, or simply a setting that the wuala client should also keep a backup as long as possible of your own files, or certain filetypes, certail folders, or certain users (that have been logged into the local wuala client in the past) and so on.

nickname replied on July 02, 2008 15:03 to the problem "wuala proper graceful shutdown methods - (with) traybar icon missing" in Wuala:
i was looking more into this tray icon missing problem at windows in general and found this extensive thread:
http://winhlp.com/node/16
please look at the end of the discussion where this one guy debugs shell32.dll on winxp and analyzes the problem and also gives hints how programs can trigger/redraw their own icon again with windows api calls and such stuff.
would be really great if this could be fixed. i still experience this behaviour pretty frequently during windows startup when wuala is automatically being started (startup/autostart/autoruns folders/functions)
also a proper exit/shutdown function in the login window at the very beginning of wuala would be a step towards solving this problem.
thanks.
nickname reported a problem in Wuala on July 02, 2008 11:01:
yellow connection status on startup after a longer downtime (apparently: db reorg)hi there,
a main problem with the wuala project as whole is, that there is far too little information on technical details, far too little documentation and real information given by the developers.
people often wonder why the wuala software behaves this or the other way, search for solutions that are sometimes no real problems if the behaviour would be properly documented.
i started up some older build (winxp) wuala client after a while of downtime and it upgraded itself.
after logging in to the wuala network (username) the wuala client now works heavily on the wuala database files in probably reoganisation tasks (fragmentsxx.db and COMP-fragmentsxx.db files being messed with the whole time)
anyways so it literally took ages for this client to finish, and the connection status icon was yellow all the time. only after a long while, and when finally the insane diskactivity has finished, the connection status icon went green again.
ctrl+alt+d _shownetworkstats displayed that it wasnt connected to any supernodes during this period, hence the yellow icon i presume.
what makes me wonder if this is a neccessary behviour, that the client cant properly connect to the network until its finished with its database overhaul. maybe some multithreading designs could help, or maybe its just really the need to bring the database into a consistant and up-to-date state again before being able to add and fetch chunks of data again to and from it.
it would really be great if the wuala team could document its piece of software much more in detail.-

every file you create you should also to consider deleting at some later point of time. keep track of the mess you create on storage devices. prime directive. its actually a human virtue if you keep yourself out of trouble and avoid a mess even from the beginning or if you simply dont care.
guess the caleido developers dont care shiznit about such minor things as messing up your storage devices or not.-

nickname replied on June 30, 2008 15:33 to the question "AppData\Wuala\Data\Temp\Upload" in Wuala:
i dont have appdata.... the wuala files used to be in
%programfiles%\caleido\wuala\ and there in data\upload data\download and so on...
but as for more recent builds they are in %temp\wuala\ upload and download or somewhere there in %temp%\wuala\
nevertheless the older builds of wuala left a big mess in the old folders, never cleaned up the old temporary files, downloads, uploads, parts- and chunkfiles.
its a pretty big chaos if you ask me that caleido doesnt care about their data layout and their mess they create on the harddisks of the users.
the usual mess on the windows platforms. companies being arrogant or ignorant about what they do and how they behave.
this has been discussed before in other threads and never really gotton any further than the information of the wuala staff that %programfiles%\caleido\wuala (and there temp further down in the tree) is the old place for tempfiles, and that gotton changed over to %temp%\wuala\....
why they simply couldnt clean up their own mess has never been answered by the caleido people.
if you ask me, they gotton counseling directly by microsoft, as their whole windows platform works this way. create mess and never clean it up again. fill up the users machines with junk and never being able to fix it again properly.
way to go :D-
