@ hellocatfood
i *totally* agree with everything you just said, and that's why i'm sad to go. for me it's just personal, i just started a great new job, lot's of things finally picking up in my life and this is just one area that needs to be streamlined. example: i have a long commute and very little personal time, so if i want to throw some podcasts into my ipod and go, it's either simple or it's not. if i was a developer i'd probably stay onboard.
that said, i *will* be keeping my eye on songbird in the hopes of coming back, when things improve. imho, all of the reasons you listed that slow songbird down are also the reasons that will make it great, in the longrun (minus that maybe they need more staff in their official team, i don't know.) but for me it's still a baby bird.

nicolaluna replied on August 22, 2009 17:53 to the idea "Podcast subscription support" in Songbird:
Well, @ hellocatfood et all, I've been giving Songbird time for *over a year now!*
It's a decent player and I love that it's open source, and free. However all of the things it doesn't have- podcasts, videos, burning, full OSX 10.4 support, lack of Gracenotes recognition for importing- and all of the constant reorganization of my music, particularly the artwork that Songbird is always forgetting- have altogether taken way too much of my personal time. It's a great, creative endeavor with a lot of potential but when so many of the things that matter for my personal use are not apparently even *on* the back burner any more, that calls it for me. Maybe it's just not for me.
So I've deleted Songbird and gone back to iTunes, and so far I'm happy. I'm nervous about my music getting accidentally encoded with DMR again on this proprietary player, but so far it hasn't happened. I've never *personally* quite understood the reasons behind wanting two players, importing stuff from iTunes, etc. If I'm going to use iTunes, why not just use iTunes?
I don't imagine that these comments will make too much of a difference to Songbird staff, but who knows. I hope someday to come back. Just my two cents.
And PS, I still really miss Koshi.
A comment on the question "Why can't I customize my display panes???" in Songbird:
@ Necimal
so, would i be correct in understanding that in the latest version of songbird if i want an add-on to show in a pane that it is not listed for, i have to go to the individual creator to request it? because that's a lot of running around: you'd have to do it basically for all the add-ons, and then wait.
if so, respectfully, i disagree. i think that makes it a broader songbird issue, not one for individual add-on creators to deal with, since they may not have even been aware of the change in this version of songbird in the first place, when they updated their add-ons for this version – nicolaluna, on July 14, 2009 20:06
nicolaluna replied on July 14, 2009 18:17 to the question "Why can't I customize my display panes???" in Songbird:
I only see one or two random add-ons in the drop down window in each of the three display/service pane, and these add-ons can not be moved to a different display pane.
For example, I have lyric master and mash tape, which are meant to be viewed in the display panes: but I can't get them into the display/service pane I want them in. Lyric master only shows on the right display pane, and mash tape only shows on the bottom. If I want to switch their locations, (which I do) I can't.
Also some of my add-ons just don't show up at all. In fact, most of them don't. They have vanished mysteriously, maybe they are hiking the Appalachian trail. (Yes, I know not all add-ons work in the display panes, like focus track. But I should be able to see the ones that do.)
In previous versions I *was* able to access my *entire* list of add-ons in each service/display pane, and use them where I chose. So you see, now I am spoiled. Songbird, you can't offer me candy and then take it away, that's not nice.
I am not a programmer and I do not know how to configure this, but I'm sure there must be a way, since it has been done before in previous versions. Thanks all for any feedback/help you have!
P.s. The Pane button add-on is neat but does not solve problem- no features for this.

How the heck can I get drop-down add-ons into the desired display pane??!.

nicolaluna replied on July 12, 2009 17:47 to the question "Have add-ons, now how do I add them to the panes?" in Songbird:
Media Flow is a *view* not an *add-on,* so perhaps this is why it won't show in the list of add-ons that pop up in the panes?
Focus Track shows up as a little "eye" icon at the bottom of my Songbird browser; when it's turned on it's blue. So maybe this Add-on also doesn't appear in your drop down lists in the panes because it's down there.
I'm saying "maybe" and "I think" on all these things because I'm not sure which OS and version of Songbird you're using, and I gather that that can make a big difference from one user to another.
However, I wonder if you are having the same problem I am- I only see one or two random add-ons in the drop down window in each display pane. I have lyric master and mash tape for example, which work in the display panes: but I can't get them into the display pane I want them in. I want my lyric master to display on the bottom and it will only show up on the right side. Der. Frstrtng. Also some of my add-ons (that used to show up in previous versions) don't show up at all.
In other words there is no way to *use* the add-ons that won't show up or go where you want them....
Is this the problem you are having too?

I think this question basically still isn't answered. There's supposedly a work-around with the Pane Button Add-on, but I don't see any options in there for changing *which* add-ons can be selected in which panes. You still don't have that option anymore.
Has anyone found a fix that works for all add-ons? Is this question answered somewhere else?

A comment on the question "Where is the watch folder settings?" in Songbird:
Ok, yeah, I'm sorry too. It's not like going back to 10.4 is like going into the stone ages. My Mac is only two years old, and that's too old for Songbird to continue supporting it?
I have been wanting to stick with Songbird over the little quirks but this is getting to be too much. If you are phasing out support for 10.4 that may be the last straw for me, guys. I've just about had it. – nicolaluna, on March 16, 2009 03:35

"The people who say that they won't use Songbird because it doesn't support ripping or burning are just foolish. "
No, they just want a level of convenience from Songbird, that equates with more established, competing media players, which doesn't concern you because you choose to use different programs to do that. The point of this discussion- in my opinion- is to answer Rob Lord's question to those people who who actually do want to rip & burn, about what we do with our CD's, and why we want Songbird to do it.
nicolaluna replied on March 01, 2009 20:01 to the idea "CD Rip / Burn Support" in Songbird:
Good point, Tom.
For what it's worth JeCh I think this argument is a moot point. It's not like one crazy wacko is asking for Songbird to do something utterly irrelevant. Fact is enough people have this expectation of Songbird as a viable media player that it's an idea with clout. And apparently they're working on it because they know this? Songbird is a better player for every additional thing that it can do as well or better than other programs.
BTW, I fricken love people who hate iTunes as much as I do. Just sayin.
