A comment on the question "Nonexistent customer service" in Xmarks:
Well, that thread was 7 months ago, and yours was (if I'm doing my math correctly and have accurate data) 6 months ago. That might be why it was answered in his and not yours. There could be other reasons, of course, but that would be the obvious one (unless there are other posts about the same problem which came before yours).
Another reason may be because they couldn't find a solution or were unable to reproduce the problem reliably. If they had refused to install the .NET update that Microsoft pushed, then they wouldn't have experienced the problem. If others did the same, then they'd have mixed reports, confusing things more. When they finally found the problem, they might have lost the original thread (since there are duplicates and it's been so long), and just picked the first one they saw.
Anyway, at least it was finally resolved (I think?), and hopefully you'll have a better experience in the future. ^.^ – Nobu, on November 14, 2009 23:56
A comment on the problem "xmarks causes a taskbar in chrome." in Xmarks:
I should work for the most part, but I guess it depends on the version of Chrome or Chromium you're using. On Chromium 4.0.240.0 (daily-ppa build 31387) the button works fine, but the menu appears all the way on the left. I need to see if that's reported on crbug yet... – Nobu, on November 08, 2009 19:08

Apparently it's working on Linux, for the most part. The location of the bubble that pops up is a little off(likely a bug in Chromium), but I'm sure a fix is just a small patch away. ;)

I don't know if it's an error or not, but this bug, which is about implementing "browser actions" on Linux, has been marked fixed. As such, I would assume they are implemented on Linux. The code is supposed to be shared across OS, but I'm not sure they're all using the same code yet.
Also, most of the related bugs are marked fixed (but that might not be all the bugs; it was a pretty specific search).
Shouldn't you be able to have the code for the tabstrip and the browser action at the same time? I wouldn't imagine it would cause too much overhead, but it is a possible solution in the mean time. Another option would be to detect whether the feature is supported, and load one or the other based on that, but that depends on there being a way in extensions to detect whether toolstrips or browser actions are supported.
A comment on the question "Bar at bottom... bug/feature request?" in Xmarks:
Same here on Linux. It's probably either not implemented in Chrome yet on Mac and Linux (the "hide toolstrip" keyboard shortcut, functionality, or possibly both), they decided to use a different shortcut for the different platforms, or it's just a bug.
some possibly related issues you may want to watch:
http://crbug.com/22382 (Create a context menu for toolstrips)
http://crbug.com/16946 (Hot key combination Ctrl+Alt+<Letter> not working in Chrome)
Edit: that last one is kind of old, so I don't know if it's even an issue anymore, plus it seems like the reporter was running Windows, so it might not be related at all. – Nobu, on September 26, 2009 21:03

Chrome dev-channel: http://dev.chromium.org/getting-invol...
Alpha Xmarks Chrome extension: http://beta.xmarks.com/program/chrome
All else fails, you can go to http://beta.xmarks.com/ , go to the bottom (where it says Xmarks for Chrome Alpha) and click on the "get started" button/link, and you'll be at the same page. You'll have to log in before you can access those pages, though.
A comment on the question "Encryption options removed from BYOS?" in Xmarks:
That makes sense. Unfortunately, the host I'm using doesn't seem to support https, so I guess I'll have to find another one.
Thanks. In the mean time, I'll take a look at Weave. Would like to avoid switching if possible, though. – Nobu, on July 29, 2009 19:27

Nobu asked a question in Xmarks on July 29, 2009 18:15:
Encryption options removed from BYOS?It looks like some options were removed from BYOS with the release of v1.0.0. Specifically, it appears there is no longer a way to choose what is encrypted during communication with the server. I looked in about:config and couldn't find anything obvious there either.
Is there a way to access that option anymore?
As a mostly unrelated side question, would it be possible to add an option/the ability to encrypt bookmarks stored on the server? Since I don't have a remote server of my own, I need to use a free host. But since the server isn't mine, I would like to encrypt my bookmarks for security(so whoever controls the server can't look at my bookmarks, and if the server is hacked they wouldn't be able to see them either). Not that it's likely, but I would like the option anyway.-

Have a look at these pages:

The latter two are geared more towards developers, but are still readable by the average person(...well, at least the first of the two is).

A comment on the problem "Memory leak during Foxmarks autosync?" in Xmarks:
I'm pretty sure this is not the case, but I want to make sure... You're not ignoring me, right? "...so far none of you are sharing tales of strained RAM capacity"? "...almost 90% of my RAM is taken up(I have 1.5GB total)" and "about 5-15% of 1GB" of swap space. Ideally, no swap should be used; especially when all that's being done is a little browsing. It should not be normal for a computer with over 2GB of memory to be running out of usable RAM. Notice I said usable RAM, not free RAM. RAM used as cache space is fine.
"does it ever actually impact system performance?" When you start using swap, yes. Swap is usually on the hard drive, whose read/write speed is greatly reduced compared to RAM(unless you're using SSDs, but it's still a bit slower). And as I said in my post earlier, yes, it is slowing down my computer considerably. Considering the browser was the only thing open, I have a 2GHz processor, and over 1.5GB of RAM, I'd say that's pretty significant. – Nobu, on November 26, 2008 00:32
Nobu replied on November 25, 2008 16:32 to the problem "Memory leak during Foxmarks autosync?" in Xmarks:
I'm using 64-bit Ubuntu (Linux), I'm not sure if they use a 64-bit compiled Firefox or not though.
It's definitely serious though; I have about the same number of bookmarks as others in this thread(a little under 200), and after leaving Firefox running for a while almost 90% of my RAM is taken up(I have 1.5GB total). After cleaning the "private data"(cache, history, etc.) a little weight is lifted(maybe 5 or 10%). Closing Firefox drops memory usage to about 15-20%. Before I close Firefox everything is slow(on the desktop and in the browser), so there is a fair impact on performance as well.
Edit: Oh, I forgot to mention, but a fair amount of my swap space is taken up also; about 5-15% of 1GB. That drops down to about 1-3% after closing Firefox.
I haven't had a chance to test the settings yet, but I'll post here again with the results as soon as I do.-

Nobu replied on November 10, 2008 23:51 to the question "Directional Sync possible?" in Xmarks:
This would be difficult if, for instance, you had different bookmarks on each computer. If you do as Eric suggests, do a forced upload, it will remove any bookmarks which are not on your current Firefox profile, then upload your set of bookmarks.
A conceivable alternative would be to setup a root folder for each computer which will be synchronizing and only allow certain computers to modify certain folders; this, however, does not solve your problem if you remove bookmarks from your Firefox profile which would want to keep on Foxmarks' servers.
The only alternative that I see, if the first two don't work, would be to create a database application which you could upload your bookmarks to and it would check for duplicates, organize, and store your bookmarks, ignoring any duplicates. This approach would be difficult for Foxmarks to implement without many changes to the way they synchronize bookmarks, therefore it probably would be necessary to create an application specifically for this purpose.
The third solution is definitely not what I'd call the best, and the three solutions I've provided are definitely not the only options, but if you tell us what parts of which solutions fit your needs and whatever else you may have thought of, we'll be a big step closer to finding the right solution.
Nobu reported a problem in Xmarks on November 07, 2008 19:46:
Foxmarks incorrectly reports bookmarks synchronizedWhile testing whether Foxmarks was providing it's own dialog for update notification, I noticed something odd. After installing the addon and restarting Foxmarks, the page which notifies you that the "upgrade" was successful comes up and says that your bookmarks have been successfully synchronized. However, I had not logged into my Foxmarks account, or even entered the information for my Foxmarks account, and, therefore, it would be impossible for Foxmarks to have synchronized my bookmarks.
Edit: After looking again, I noticed that Foxmarks also reports that it is successfully synchronizing. While that may have been the case if I actually had logged into my account, it is incorrect in saying that anything was synchronized, as there would be problems if people could synchronize their bookmarks without an account and my bookmarks would likely have been changed if they were.
- Steps to reproduce:
- Install Foxmarks addon(I used 2.5.0 from Mozilla addons site).
- Restart Firefox via button in the extension manager.
- Click "Cancel" when asked to setup a Foxmarks Profile.
- Check the box which asks whether you want to show the wizard next time or not(thereby disabling the wizard) and click "Ok".
- Close and re-open Firefox; the tab notifying you of a successful upgrade should open
- Open the Foxmarks settings window; it should report bookmarks as successfully synchronizing(despite the conflict of not having logged in nor ever having synchronized previously).
