Sounds like a bad download. Delete and download and try a burn again. I had to burn Jolicloud twice to my USB drive to get it bootable.

The Ubuntu Poulsbo drivers work only in Ubuntu. And still the drawback is the kernel headers have to be reinstalled every time there is a kernel update. There is still no solution to the infamous DRM error when Ubuntu can't see the Poulsbo drivers loading. Quite frankly, its a mess with the drivers. We will probably have to wait for Jolicloud's engineers to do a better job than Intel and Ubuntu's mobile team of writing drivers for the GMA 500 chipset that actually work.

Until that happens, stick with vesa.

The company representative hasn't indicated yet when a public beta release will be available. People would rather get it from off the Jolicloud website rather the torrents or wait for an invitation. I look forward to seeing a beta Jolicloud!

You can download and install the Opera .deb package. After that you will need to accept the public key in the Terminal to allow future Opera updates through the Update Manager.

Just invoke sudo Synaptic in the Terminal. You can add it to Favorites but due to a bug, unlike with the Update Manager, its useless there. ;-)

The latest version of OOO is 3.1.1. That can be done through adding the Open Office Scrobblers PPA through etc/sources/list with gksudo in the Terminal and then requesting the PPA key to be imported and performing in the Terminal a sudo update & sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. That should update Open Office to the latest available version.

You can download Ubuntu compatible programs in deb. and install them with Gdebi. Some applications, like the Opera browser, may need the signing key to be added through the Terminal to allow the website to update the application in the future.

I created my Jolicloud boot USB in Kubuntu with Portable Linux. Jolicloud won't present a splash screen while booting to the desktop. But it will allow you to install it to the hard drive. I liked it well enough that I decided to keep it.

Go to Preferences tab and go to Main Menu. Choose Favorites. Then click on New Item. Type in Synaptic in the Description box and synaptic in the Command box. An icon will be created. Click close to save. The Synaptic application will then appear in the Favorites folder. There is a bug that keeps Jolicloud from invoking sudo when Synaptic is launched so any sudo operation with Synaptic will have to be carried out from the Terminal.

Cool. On Ubuntu, users have had to download Ubuntuzilla just to keep Firefox/Thunderbird current. Canonical does not do application updates except at every release cycle when a new Ubuntu version is released. This means old applications remain by default even when new application versions become available between an Ubuntu release.

Patrice, under Ubuntu you can set the password to always remember. It gets stored in the GNOME keyring manager where applications like an Internet connection can ask for it at log-in. In Kubuntu, password information goes into the KDE wallet but the function is the same.

Adam, correct. Its just too bad Intel dropped support plans for the video chip in netbooks ironically running with with their own Atom CPU processors. The vesa drivers are ok with Poulsbo but its still far from ideal.

No. Given this is an alpha, people just have to wait. I guess its no longer "exclusive" when people download and install it without waiting for an invite first. Its different from Ubuntu so it isn't as user configurable as Ubuntu but I've found I can live with it.

Yes. The Ubiquity partitioner identifies any other operating systems on your computer and asks if you you want to install Jolicloud alongside them. It can do that as well as become the sole default operating system if you choose it.

Yep. The alpha is invitation only but its so popular the software has been released on Internet torrents. Jolicloud's founders didn't expect that so a new procedure will have to be created for joining on the beta. Its a good thing and hopefully it will "open" to the world once the beta is released so every one can try it out.

Synaptic and the Update Manager can be installed in the Administration tab with some work. Just be aware the Software Sources application does not work under Jolicloud.

The open chrome drivers are better supported on some distros than on others. The vanilla vesa drivers will power netbooks but its not an optimal solution. By focusing on netbooks, Jolicloud can help to solve hardware problems. It can leave laptops and PCs to the big boys who support them anyway. As for a solution, we just have to be patient.

The beta should allow users to configure a Jolicloud account than wait for an invitation from the company. You can choose your own ID and be able to set up a password and family members would be able to create their own accounts for the same computer. The idea would be to give the Jolicloud community the power to decide how they want to compute on the cloud. At least that is what I would like to see happen.
