You should be able to melt the cut end with a lighter or candle. Since the stap is made of nylon it will melt and become plastic like, sealing the end. Be careful as you apply the heat though, if it gets hot enough the nylon will continue burn when you remove the flame...if that happens just blow it out. I recommend moving it back and forth continuously to just melt it avoiding combustion.
